Last year coming back from scotland i blew the the head gasket probably because i did not take too much notice of the temp rise, i only have a 2 birth caravan and thought the two ton disco would have no problems at all, i got it fixed and to test it blasted down to blackpool 70 mph no probs ,about 120miles from home
But today i was on my way back to scotland and only got 5 Miles and this time i kept an eye on the temp,, off the scale , lifted the bonnet and coolant was all over, yet around the doors there is no problem ,
it has a new jeremy fearn intercooler, uprated pupm, stage 2 turbo, egr removed,de-catted performance exhaust system when i bought it would this affect the towing abilities , my immediate thoughts are thermostat, water pump could there be somthing else ?? need to get sorted for the summer. Please Advice required thanks

Hi Eric, first thoughts from me would be to test for head gasket leakage - yes I know, but just in case eh? - so, do any of the following apply?:

1. When on tickover, is there any bubbling in the header tank?

2. Any mayonnaise under the header tank cap or oil filler cap?

3. Any of the hoses blown?

4. Does the heater in the car work normally?

5. Are you losing any water?

6. Have you lost any performance from the car?

Do you want to try those first and come back?

Cheers
Dave

Mine overheated only long runs fully loaded towing.Rad was blocked.Driving short trips around ten miles it was fine.

Hi Eric, just for your info, I run the 2 Discos Tdi 200 & Tdi 300 auto without the viscous fans attached. They NEVER overheat or use water.

none of the above are a problem changed the coolant just to make sure it hadn't been mixed , then give it a blast the temp gauge then went up and down ,could this be a sticky thermo stat? but then went right up and stayed there so now it is overheating and i am not even towing anything , ordered a
thermo stat from a car parts shop for tuesday going to change that and see from there ..should i go for a dealer themo stat ??? instead of the car parts shop .

If you have any doubts go for the original part - if only to make yourself feel better.

Whe I changed the thermostat in my Tdi 200 it was not displaying the problems you have and I'm sure not that this is down to it being faulty.

But I suppose it does no harm to replace and see - when you top up the cooling system try to ensure there are no airlocks.

Can't suggest anything else, sorry.
