disco 3.9 clunk whilst braking

hiya everyone,i own a 1998 lpg disco in need of a little tlc.it has 2004 r/r vogue alloys,which sort of brings it up to date appearance wise but apart from it needing a new camshaft kit its got a very annoying clunk when coming to a stop.i,d really like to have a go at this myself but trying to listen to where the noise is coming from whilst driving is,nt too easy so can i disconnect front or rear propshft and still drive?will this distinguish whether the noise is coming from rear axle side or front?any ideas?car has 124000 miles on it.last year it struggled to tow a trailer tent uphill,i thought these things could pull houses down.cheers craig

First check all your suspension bushes and the a-frame ball joint.

does it sound like it is on the front axle when you brake ? if so you owe me an appolgey for giving my discovery the same annoying clunk. hehehe ill check it when the ground is dry but i reckon its gonna be a bush thats on its way out.

to be honest mate its difficult to pinpoint where the clunks coming from.i,m hoping you lads are right and its something has simple has a bush gone.sometimes the clunks really bad and if you,ve got your hand on gear changer you can feel it has if its coming from autobox(oh feck it thats all i need ) other times you can hardly hear or feel it but its there.i,ve got someone coming out to change auto fluid/filter so whilst he,s there i,ll pick his brains

A frame joint - like Hughesy sed first thing to check.

whats the best way to check the a frame joint?

It's a bit of a pain in the arse to get at but you need to get a big pry bar or lever of some sort and get under there and wiggle it about. If you put your hand on the ball joint you should be able to feel if there's any movement. Just a tiny bit of play in the joint can make a very loud clonking when you're on the move. Same procedure with the suspension bushes.
