Hello everybody !
Hope you are doing well ! Reaching out as i am faced with an issue whose origins i cannot determine. The issue is a loud knocking noise (the knocks are of a high recurrence speed) coming from underneath my Disco 1 when driving above a certain speed. When going slowly the noise is not emitted. Some notes i would like to add before we try to determine the source of the issue are : I have fully rebuilt the transfer and gear boxes and have brand new rear and front propshafts. All the gears can be engaged very smoothly and the diff lock, locks perfectly and functions as it should. Moreover there is quite a lot of play on the rear left wheel and a humming noise when spinning it by hand (Bad wheel bearing ?). Also, i suspect that the front diff has quite a lots of play and slack like the one in the video whose link you can find below. Lastly could my issue be halfshaft related ? Looking forward to hearing your opinion.
Kindest Regards

I have had a pinion nut come loose on my rear diff. Manifested itself by a noise and vibration at road speeds but wasn't easy to diagnose. Like you I thought it must be prop shaft or U/J related.
Easy fix though once you get the bloody spigot out!;););)
But do check all wheel bearings etc first as they are easier still to fix!

Hello there,
Many thanks for the immediate and informative reply ! Its highly appreciated ! I will proceed and recheck all the wheel bearings although the rear left one must surely be bad. Do you think that could cause the noise i am hearing ? I will also check the pinion nuts on both diffs.
Kindest Regards

TBH, if the vid showed the play in the flange with both wheels on the ground then oops that is a lot!
Do the wheel bearing first, then get back on here if you get stuck removing the spigot. Also, if it IS loose you may well need a dial test indicator to check the backlash/play between the pinion and the crown wheel.
I did takes some pics when I did it so if you need them I'll try and find them!

Hi again,
I am oh so thankful for your kind willingness to assist ! It really is highly appreciated ! I will report back when i will have rectified the bearing issue.

I'm inclined to think your diff shot, that's a lot of noise, if your going to do the wheel bearing probably best to pull the half shafts the pull the diff an rebuild it, I recently did a diff on Morris, it's so smooth a quite now, no noise when turned, that noise could be related to the pinion or the carriers

What sort of Morris if you don't mind me asking?
I have a Morris Marina rear axle in a Kit Car.
Wondering where you got the spares from.
The crown wheel lost a few teeth so I had to source another one. Fortunately had a mate who worked in a scrap yard who was able to get one for me.
I think rebuilding a diff might be a bit of a big ask for some, especially if you need to stretch the casing to get it all apart.
I remember the days when a Haynes would tell you how to do it. Sadly no longer!

It's a Morris minor 1000, so no need to stretch the diff, but the manual I have shows how to do it and YouTube video I watched showed how to make the tool, so no great worry, and I set my preload using a calculated weight, easy to do

Don't disagree, sorting out my Disco 1 diff was easy too, once I got the spigot out..
So did you do the preload using a weight on a sort of small breaker bar? or a spring balance to give it a measure pull? Or there is another way using string around the flange. All great fun!!
What sort of Morry thou? We had a Traveller for years, i.e. our family when I was a kid. Took us all over the continong, including the Alps. Loved it! 1241 KH, a Hull reg, KH meaning Kingston upon Hull.
One of our son-in-laws loves his M1000 pick-ups of which he has two. But he is very good with a welder!

Hi there,
Many thanks for taking the time to go through my post ! I completely understand. Since yesterday i have put together a massive list of parts all for repairing and refurbishing the 4 corners of the Disco 1 as well as the front AND rear diffs. Its come out quite expensive to say the least (around 4500 pounds) but i am gonna have to do it. Its one of my dailies and i bloody love it. Will update when i have bought everything.
Kindest Regards

WHAAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????????????

Yep. The bloody customs and the shipping costs.
I'm a real tight arse, I know that.
But I'd check it all out and make sure I wasn't buying stuff I didn't need at those prices.
Some of it may be seen as preventative maintenance, depending on how many miles you drive, but a lot of it will not need to be done ever.

Yeah some of it will definitely be preventative maintenance. However, i like to be safe and know that i have done all the work properly myself.

Still at 4500, it's still a cheap car, compared with the price of repairing a modern car, you could buy a D2 for that plenty on e bay in the UK, fly over, get a D2, load it up with stuff, new or used drive it back

Well that is true ! However i would still have to pay customs for that D2 hehe. You never get away with customs. They like to milk people even if the order is like 10 pounds worth.
