Got a knackered front swivel housing where i had to drill out the calliper bolts. I have a disco 1 front axel available. Will the swivel housing from the disco fit the 1986 ninety by just stripping it down and swopping over. Also will the half shafts and CV joints just swap over if i do the diff as well? I want to swop the Half shaft cause they are in alot better condition. I notice the disco axel has the thinner drive flanges, will there be a wheel fitment issue?

Thanks

Gary

All the parts should swap, but if you are putting the disco half shafts in then I would just do a straight swap of both of the whole swivel housings, as the bearing and seal surfaces may be different, depending on the half shafts.

This will mean that you only have to undo the swivel balls from the disco axle and defender axle undo the diff/s and swap them over, making the whole lot easier.

The half shaft flange is thinner on a disco but this will mean you can fit alloys on the front without spacers.

Thanks for the reply dr evil. can i still use my defender steels if i swap the whole lot over? There is no issues with stud patterns or center holes is there? Just want to make sure before i start so i know the size of the task before doing the seals on the donor parts.

Its 1 off 1 on. They are direct replacements. The only thing you need to change is the brake pipes to the calipers. I think the disco has 2 pipes and the 90 has 1.

if your swapping complete axle use the disco radius arms as the defender arms and so brackets on axle are thinner upto 300 tdi otherwiseyou will need to space with washers

Sorry my first thanks should have been to Rangerovermad and dr evil. Johns 90, the callipers on the chassis are single brake pipes so hopefully should be good. Thanks for all the replies, its reassuring to know it should be fairly straight forward.

Cheers

Are the swivels on a disco 1 axel the same as the ninety axel? the swivels on the disco are knackered but my ninety ones are good. trying to cut down on the cost of swapping over.

only once 300 tdi was introduced ,previous defenders have a different chrome ball with a top pin with bush ,disco has top pin and bearing

I guess identifying the new axles is the biggest problem. I cannot find any ident serial number on them, but reading all the forum info that i can i have come up with this discription. The rear axle has 3 bolt prop flange with rubber doughnut. The front axle has a flat for the locking washer between the 2 lock nuts. It is non ABS it is 24 spline at the diff end on the shafts. Any body guess what axles these are? from what i read they are likely to be 1993 onwards probably from a 300tdi.
