Hey guys a friend of mine has fitted LED headlights to his 200tdi disco and found they arent as bright as normal bulbs,
Is any one able to help or has this happened to anyone ?

Cheers
Dave

LEDs are a brighter light for less power, but dont yet have the power for lighting at a distance. ideal for side lights and indicators, but not for headlights.

Cheers fella

Im still in process of rebuilding 300tdi disco so I wont be going LED head lights.

What headlights would you recommend stay with filament bulb or change ?

Both of us will be doing a fair bit of green laning

Why won't they pass a mot as long as pattern is correct if you buy the right kit the is no problem in the mot manual a. Light can not fail for been too bright just on pattern

Basically that's correct, the MoT can't fail on brightness (within reason), but it will fail on either beam pattern or colour. And yes, the beam pattern is carefully checked, as well as the area of highest intensity or hot spot to check the aim.

All HID upgrade sets are installed into lamp housings designed for filament bulbs; otherwise you wouldn't be upgrading, and there in lies the rub.
The reflector isn't just that shiny bit at the back of the light, it has been designed to produce the correct beam pattern in conjuction with the fluting on the inside of the lens when the filament is placed at the ideal point, known as the focal point.

Neither LED nor HID upgrades will position the light emiting device at the correct focal point for the correct beam pattern to be produced.

High Intensity Discharge lights are normally fitted into "projector" type lights and must also meet further external conditions such as self levelling suspension and a headlight washer system to be acceptible to the MoT.
Likewise LED headlights are now being fitted to some new vehicles, but the lighting units have been specifically designed for LEDs.

Use whatever you want when you're offroad, but on the road, the ministry unfortunately has the whip-hand.
