Disco 2

do all disco's have diff lock? I have a USA spec 2003 hse 4.6 v8. The top of the transfer shift does not show diff lock instructions, were they optional, or is it automatically done?

No, the early ones had the bits in the transfer case but not the linkage, then LR removed the bits and then refitted them and the linkage. I think yours is likely to have neither.

no difflock on early ones but an option (only) on the later ones after 02 i think but it can be fitted on the 1999 to around 2001

You're in the MY area where LR say that the the linkage was taken out, so a major job and cost to refit the parts, although apparently a kit was available to do the job.

Feel around the top of the transfer box at the front and see if there is a short shaft poking up out of the top of the box, if you have that, then you have the linkage, if not then you are not able to hook it up.

Pictures below. Note that the lever for the diff lock (No 39) is present from MY 03 onwards, but missing on the earlier one.

Have a look, if you have the shaft sticking out, then you'll need the Diff Lock linkage from a Disco 1 or try and buy the bits. I think that although LR said it was removed internally, you'll probably find it is in there.

According to the owner's handbook for an 03 NAS disco you do have a diff lock, and according to the owner's handbook for an 03 UK disco, diff lock is not fitted.
So NAS discos have it, then maybe not if it was an option when the vehicle was purchased new.
