Disco 2 v8 keeps cutting out randomly

Update

Problem seems to be fixed after making some room in the engine bay I ran my 2 battery’s in parallel (I didn’t want to spend the money for a bigger one) and I have had that running for about 6 hours of driving with no problems. Thanks to everyone for the help and I hope this will help someone else one day
 
Alternator was recently changed been running the 2 battery’s in parallel fixed the problem got stuck on a byway for 7 hours yesterday after loosing drive and power steering. running the winch constantly engine didn’t cut out once.

think both the battery’s I had where too weak but together they are more than enough

Interesting...

I've literally got the exact same fault on my 1988 Land Rover...

It will start and sit there idling, then decides to turn its self off, starts straight back up afterwards...

Again, I could be driving down the road and all of a sudden, nothing, like I've turned the ignition off, but the restarts straight away...

I'm beginning to suspect the distributor...??

Okay, but thats not applicable to the D2 V8 is it :(
 
Otto was doing this at times, usually cutting hot. IACV was solidly crudded - new one was only £40 delivered. Also cleaned the MAF sensor - grille off the front and cleaned with rubbing alcohol o a cotton wool ball. Then plugged the 4 outlets in the back of the sensor it with cotton wool, stood it on the outlet end so the intake was facing upwards, poured rubbing alcohol in until it overflowed the sensor passage. Left it to soak through, pulled the cotton wool out of the passages, left it to dry another half hour before reinstalling. Works perfect now.
Also check plug leads - earth one end of a probe, then put the other to the plug leads near the plug end and also at the coil boot end. Otto was still playing up a bit and I checked that way (after getting a nice jolt). We had 2 duff leads, each on a different coil, so when they tracked out it took out 2 or 4 cylinders at a time. If they track then you should see / hear the spark.
New set of leads on Otto and he was fine.
 
I recently started experiencing issues with my D2 v8, when engine is cold it starts first time everytime, however when being driven and up to temp if I park up, then go back to it the engine will turn but no signs of ignition. If I leave it an hour or so to cool off it will start. I think it is my CPS unit, so ordered a replacement.

I am working for the next few weekends so decided yesterday to drop it to my mates garage for fitting, halfway there the engine died on a dual carriageway, and refused to restart. 4 hours later the recovery truck turned up, bloody thing started again and drove it onto the back of flatbed.

Will know in a few days if this is the longterm fix.
 
That definitely sounds like a failing crankshaft position sensor.
Also make sure your battery connections are tight and not corroded.

henny@canarias: Hi, I read your post with interest as exactly the same happened to my disco 2, 4.6 V8 auto. Including the embarrassing moment when the recovery truck arrives and the engine started. I wanted to ask you if the CPS was indeed the problem.

I doubt he will answer you as we haven't seen him since 2022 :rolleyes:

Maybe you should start your own thread and get some more relevant answers ...
