Disco 2 timing chain gone

Hi guys

I posted a thread a few days ago (https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/disco2-roadside-breakdown.298976/ )after my '02 disco cut out on the motorway and needed recovering.

My garage has been looking at it and called today and said the timing chain has gone and that it's a new engine job (so car written off basically).

I can't find much on the Web about this issue other than that timing chains should last the lifetime of the vehicle. I only bought the landy about 4 months ago and it came with a decent service history.

Anyone else had experience with this? The garage tell me it means replacing the engine, trust their knowledge but just checking that's definitely the case? If so it means the car will have to be scrapped which is such a shame it'seems my pride and joy.

If it stopped at high speed the internals will be a mess.

I was going about 85 so probably...

Given that my insurance company will offer me peanuts would anyone suggest that buying a new (old) engine is a better option? I can see some on eBay for bout 700....

Hope your insurance company and the police don't read that. Engine will more than likely be scrap.
 
If you can get a replacement at the right price and the rest of the vehicle is worth the hassle, ( chassis etc) . plenty of TD5's are being scrapped becuase of steel worm.

That's good advice thank you. Have found an engine for about a grand with a rec company that do a basic service and offer a 3 month warranty so will go with that.

Going to have you put her indoors on the game to pay for it all but needs must.
 
Unusual for a timing chain to go.
Ive mentioned before that its not uncommon to see Cat D Discos on Copart with Primary damage being Mechanical.
Maybe worth asking your insurance co.
Nice to have a willing misses though, I heard Govt Ministers pay well!

The chain is quite resistent but the guides are sh*T, i was lucky once that the front cover had to be removed due toi a crack in the viscous fan's bearing and the guide(which is plastic) became like in the pic when it was grabbed, few smaller parts were in the sump... the engine was at around 100K miles at that time

replaced the chain too and the new one was about 4mm shorter than the old one as well, so if you get an old engine better fit new chain and guides to be on the safe side for at least 100K miles

advice for everybody is to filter the oil when it's changed and watch for small plastic bits in it and if you find any replace the guides ASAP cos those are parts from one of them

Thanks for the heads up on filtering the oil re looking for plastic
