Hi,

I’ve read these forums for a while now but never joined. Had a Defender 200tdi and Disco V8 but have now moved on to a Disco 2 TD5.

Got a couple of problems that I could do with some help with..

Firstly, there is an almighty squeal/squeak/whistle from 2000rpm-3000rpm when accelerating hard. Forum searches have brought up anything from manifold warping to turbo failure. It’s pulling ok, feels down on power I suppose, but not greatly. So, is there a typical cause for this?

Secondly, the stereo is very quiet, almost like it will only go a third of the way to full volume.

Thirdly, got an oil leak. Going to have a good look tomorrow to see where it’s originating from, but would appreciate any ideas from experienced TD5 owners.

Cheers,

James

Don't know if this will help with the oil leak:

I've put some photos on there to try and help, I had a horrible oil leak coming from the three seals shown in this thread. I've still got an oil leak coming from the back of the engine at the bottom, so it's gearbox out to investigate.
I'll try and put a thread together when I do, as I can't find one for gearbox removal.

As for the whistle noise, check for air leaks in the pipes and air box, then go from there, and hopefully someone with more Land Rover knowledge than me will be able to help.

Can't help much with the other issues, and I'm just guessing on this one :)Check the fader and balance controls - you sure the sound's not just coming out of one speaker??
Otherwise no idea. Can the amplifier still provide output at a reduced amount before it breaks, or is it amp gone, sound gone??

Good luck!

Believe me I am.

After reading about manifold woes I'm thinking it will be that. Going to have a closer look today- any tips?

Thanks.

It would appear it is the exhaust manifold. Had a good feel around this afternoon (good job my hands aren't huge)- the lower bolt nearer the bulkhead is missing and also the upper nearest the radiator is missing too. All the rest are intact.

My next question is, how much of a job is it to do myself? I'm not completely inept and have done plenty of work on my cars in the past. I've been quoted £300 all in to do the job at a LR independent specialist- that includes a ready skimmed manifold, removal of all bolts, helicoiling if necessary, new bolts, and re-fitting.

What do you think?

Stereo is standard LR with the amp under passenger seat.

Going to investigate the oil leak when i get some time at the weekend.
