Hi,

A shock tower on my Disco 2 is suffering from some serious corrosion, so I ordered a new genuine Landrover one from Paddocks. It finally arrived today, however the square 'nut' on the top that accommodates the upper retaining bolt for the shock absorber appears to be unthreaded. I'm guessing that this one is a dud, or could it be that the threads are buried under the paint? Don't want to start hacking the paint away in case it has to be returned.

you can just see the threads through the paint either that and they havnt been machined properly

Yeah I saw that, but I think its just tooling marks, cant see any lead at the start of the thread.

Back to Paddocks. Cant see any mention of 'cut your own threads with a new bolt' in Rave!

Another arrived at Paddocks today from LR, this is also unthreaded, they suspect a faulty batch. May end up with a Britpart... :-/

I believe you will find that the original assembly used self-threading bolts that cut their own threads when inserted. There were used in quite a few places on the chassis.

That is possibly why you don't haver threads in the holes.

If it was me, I'd open them up and put a bolt and nyloc nut through them.

It appears that you are quite correct! I asked another supplier, Sam at Island 4x4 confirms that all these D2 shock towers, regardless of brand, are unthreaded, the bolt cuts the thread. What a bizarre way of doing things. Pity that Paddocks were unaware of this, would have saved some messing around with returns.
