Disco 2 Locked Radio

Hi all

Friend of mine has a 2003 facelift Disco 2 with a factory fitted RADIO / CD Player. "Somebody" tried to get the radio going by inserting a invalid code resulting in the radio now being "locked". The LR dealer advised that the radio is now u/s and need to be repaced with a new unit at a cost of R6k.

I have kept it on for 8 hours continuously. I have disconnected the battery and also waited for a couple of day's, but to no avail.

According to the LR agent, the code was tried once too many and this resulted in the radio being locked "permanently" - is this true?

Can this radio not be reset at all?

This has been mentioned before in a forum and we were informed, yes the head unit is now un-useable, unlike the D1 units.
I'm sure a car radio shop that does repairs will sort it for you by replacing the offending processor chip.

Stop worrying.

If you take the unit out (assume it is a Becker) and get the serial number off the back of the radio.

Then contact your LR dealer and give him the number and ask for the code.

I did this to mine when I had a flat battery and got mixed up with the radio code.

One phone call and ten minutes later, all was OK.

P.S. The locking message goes off after about 15 minutes and then you can just try again.

If you think you know the code but are not sure, you get many attempts at it.

thanks. Any idea on what chip we must look for?

some need proof of ownership - go in with the radio and V5.

No I haven't sorry, but a car radio techie would.

i have just realised after buying my disco a coupel of weeks ago i don't have the radio code.

Nether have I, my code was never activated by the Dealer when new.

Don't think you can once it's activated thats it

This was taken from the audio manual as claims to refer to the R660, R960 and R990 head units

SECURITY CODE INFORMATION

To reduce the risk of theft,Discovery radio/cassette and CD players are programmed with a four digit security code.Once activated,this code prevents the unit from functioning if it is illegally removed from the vehicle.

There are 10,000 different codes -making your radio equipment valueless to a thief unless he has the correct one.In addition,each unit is further
protected by a time delay penalty system that effectively defies even the most systematic attempt to break the code.

NOTE:If an incorrect code is entered,a one minute time delay is imposed before a second code can be attempted.Each time a wrong code is entered,the time delay doubles (2 min,4 min, 8 min,etc.)making theft a very unattractive
proposition.
On delivery of the vehicle you were supplied with a Security Information card.This card contains a record of the four digit security code,as well as
the unit's unique serial number.The serial number is also stamped into the metal side of the unit and,in the event of theft,would confirm proof of ownership.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you keep a safe record of the security code and heed the following advice:
•NEVER keep a record of the security code in the car.
•If you lose your code number,contact the nearest Land over dealer,who will be able to obtain this information for you.

Activating the code
Your dealer will have correctly activated the security code before you took delivery of the vehicle.This will be confirmed whenever you switch the unit on by ‘CODE ’ appearing BRIEFLY in the display.
If this display is absent,the radio will still work, but will not be protected by the security code.If this is the case,you should activate the code by
keeping the ‘up ’ tuning button depressed while turning the set on (a two-tone bleep will sound).
Before activating the code,ensure that you have the Security Information card with the security
code on it.
