Hi All,
Ok, I want to fit some parking sensors to my disco2 'cos last tuesday in the Asda car park I dented a delivery van door 'cos the pratt parked behind me while I wasn't looking, I'm not so bothered about the dent in the van, but it put a tiny scuff mark on my bumper and that's just not on. And yes I've tried all the other methods, tow bar etc. the tow bar doesn't protect the corners BTW. So I'm going to fit my parking sensors which I bought 18 months ago. What I would like to know is where to take the sensor wiring, I've got 4 sensors, so was planning to run all the wires to the nearside and up through the floor. I can see a cable running up the back corner but can't find where exits. I have also removed the grill next to the seat squab and found a plug and socket which I assume feeds the lights.
Advice please from someone who's done it!

Obviously not big enough for me to see! A set of circumstances where parking sensors would have saved the day. You had to be there!

Anyhow! what's wrong with Parking sensors, just as useful as ABS, airbags, seat belts, power steering etc. etc. :p

Now let's 'ave some bloody useful information on 'ow to fit 'em instead of all this crap! :nospamhere:

I agree parking sensors are a good thing, as is anything to improve safety. Mine were fitted as standard and I use (rely on) them every day when reverse parking.

What's happend to peoples driving skills these days? even Micra's have them fitted.

The best inventions are, electric windscreen washers and a heated rear window. Abs, air bags, belts and the rest I can do without.

Nothing to do with driving skills, just a useful aid as are mirrors, trouble is all cars have blind spots that even mirrors can't see, particularly behind the rear doors of any 4x4. Any child behind one can easily be missed.

But I don't want to get into that argument, all I want is some advice on where to root my sensor wiring.

Thanks & Regards

I have reverse sensors on my disco, only fitted last year as i have always left a yard or so at the rear and had to get back in and go back a bit more, I could reverse within an inch or two with my RR and and with any other cars I have owned, so it must be a spare wheel thing.

Theres only two connections required power picked from the reverse light curcuit and earth. the socket you have found may be for the trailer lighting if you don't already have that fitted with a tow bar, but i don't know if that also includes a reverse light. I had a grommet in the boot floor near the tail lights to pass the wire through so connection was only a five mins job.

Thanks for that, is your disco a series 2, mine is, and I can't find the rubber grommet in the floor you mention. There is one up the back but is packed with wires, so don't think I can get an extra 4 wires in, plus it's a long way up the back from underneath. I think I'm just going to drill a hole through the floor. Yes I have a full tow pack fitted, but I think most of that goes to the other side. Just a matter of finding which wire is the reversing light. I think it's Green/purple not to be confused with Green/brown.

Thanks & Regards

Just did mine today.

Took about an hour in total. Got a kit for £35 off of ebay. Opted for the buzzer version (as you can get LED lights and all sorts). I went for a mid-priced decent make (Quanan - apologies if this is construed as sales - it is not - simply wanting to let people know of good experiences) as there seems to be a lot of cheap stuff and equally expensive systems around.

The kit came with a hole saw which made light work of the bumper. On the middle sensors I went through the bumper beam behind the bumper cover. This beam is glass fibre filled thermoplastic and is also easy to drill and makes fitting much simpler.

The wires were threaded behind the bumper well out of view. They were then pulled up at the rear corner into the rear tail-light recess of the bodywork and then through the rubber grommet to the access panel next to the rear door. Box of tricks went in there and the buzzer was placed inside the cubby box.

Positive and negative wires need to be connected to the reversing lamp which I did by splicing to the wires going into the right side rear tail light binnacle (wires 2 and 4 I think – but easy to trace if you open the unit and trace to the bottom reversing lamp).

Job was quite simple to undertake – most difficult was getting the wires through the grommet into the car – I bodged this a bit by adding another hole/slash to the grommet.

I am well pleased with the result – works perfectly and cost £40 plus an hour. Compared to my other car that I had a faulty sensor fitted at the main dealer at a cost of £200, it is a bargain.

Hi Tuizner,
Thanks for sharing, as you maybe noticed this post is over a year old. And
that's when I fitted my sensors. I did mine the same as yours and managed to get the wires through the grommet without having to make an extra hole, very tight though. The electronics just lay on the floor inside the compartment in the boot. I choose the wireless version which has a nice little led display/readout which picks up it's power from the radio supply and the wire is fed down the radio vent on top of the dash and the display is stuck on top of the dash with double sided adhesive,
I'm very pleased with how it works and has worked perfectly since installation.
