Hi, my td5 disco 2 is due for an mot later this year and, after some considerable googling and a very dull conversation with my neighbour who knows "everything" about cars, I'm baffled by the more stringent emissions test for diesels and whether I'm likely to have an issue or not...
My neighbours 05 plate octavia tdi failed on emissions as the "plate value" is very low. Looking at the disco I can't find a plate value and this would seem to suggest that it will fall into the default (3.0m-1) value..

Anyone had their td5 mot'd recently and had any issues with this?

Car still has EGR fitted and new MAF, cat is (I think) working but not sure how to check one way or the other on that..

Basically I'm just trying to get an idea of whether I'm going to need to start doing more to it now to avoid, where possible, a fail on emissions in a few months

Looks like it should be on the plate on the slam panel of the engine bay where the VIN number and paint code and weights are located

That's what I thought but the figure shown in most of the online examples isn't there on mine. Which, if I'm right, is a good thing as it'll default to 3!

True. I'm just struggling to know if I will have an issue as while there's lots of info about actually putting it into real terms (for me) is proving to be a challenge!
Surely I can't be the only one, or maybe I'm worried about nowt.

stricter limits its says are for vehicles with dpf you haven got one fitted,ive not had any issues with older diesels
 
A TD5 will be the same now as it has always been. You'll have a basic govenor smoke test.

There's the info on it:

Smoke test
The smoke emitted from diesel (compression ignition) engined vehicles is assessed for its density. It is carried out by the use of an approved and calibrated smoke meter.

The engine will be accelerated up to governed speed and the density of the smoke measured.

After the third acceleration, if the average reading is equal to or below the appropriate level the vehicle will pass the smoke meter test. However if the average is higher, a further acceleration is carried out and the average of the last three readings are used, this will continue until a maximum of six accelerations have been carried out.

If the average of the fourth, fifth and sixth acceleration is higher than the appropriate level the vehicle will not pass the smoke meter test.

The appropriate levels for the smoke meter test are as follows:

  • non turbocharged diesel vehicle first used before 1 January 2008: 2.5m-1
  • turbocharged diesel vehicle first used before 1 January 2008: 3.0m-1
  • diesel vehicle first used on or after 1 January 2008 and before 1 January 2014: 1.5m-1
  • diesel vehicle first used on or after 1 January 2014: 0.7m-1
In addition to the smoke meter readings, any of the following will result in the vehicle being refused a certificate:

  • exhaust emits excessive smoke or vapour of any colour, to an extent likely to obscure vision
  • emissions cannot be measured because a tail pipe is damaged or an accessory is fitted which prevents the insertion of the smoke meter probe
  • insufficient oil in the engine or low oil pressure which could cause engine damage if engine is accelerated
  • obvious signs of an engine defect such as an unusual noise or emission of smoke
  • obvious signs that the governors have been tampered with or are not operating
It is important that vehicles are properly maintained (including changing of timing belts) in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendation and presented for test at normal working temperature.

Just for information. My Freelander TD4 pasted the last MOT with a smoke reading of 0.09, which is well under the 3.0 smoke limit.

Hi, Just had my 2004 D2 TD5 MOT'd and tester looked at the small sticker on the panel above the radiator (1.84) That is the max reading when tested. Mine was 0.24.

I couldn't see a figure on there when I checked mine.
Does yours have its egr still in place?
