Maybe could see the linkage, I can't say as mine isn't fitted with it. I would have thought if it is fitted, the transfer box gearstick would have diff lock written on it

unfortunately labelling has proven to be very hit and miss in both directions, and it if was rigged up on one that didn't originally have it I doubt the person who did it would bother to do anything about either the label or the gear knob.
Mine is just like yours D2 TD5 auto, no difflock and no label to say any different.

Funny thing is my disco has the label on the dash in front of the gearstick, so I thought it had it when I took it for a test drive before purchasing, then learnt that not all had them fitted.

As i said in post #24 if a previous owner had connected it up they may well have just not bothered to change the label or the gear knob.
Only sure answer is to check for a physical connection

which tells me you have a centre diff.. the suffix on the tb should also tell you this. But probably easier to look for spigot and switch as post #20 .. if your mechanic is not confident with LR transmissions, I suggest finding someone who is, or keep posting on here in as much detail as possible..
I also suggest a search on the tube of you for vids explaining how the transmission works … have a nosy at Britannica restorations or the land rover workshop series for the LT230…

No the light is not there. nor does the tc light. Sorry for the late reply to you all, I'm just in from work after a mare of a day. I am going to use it tomorrow for work, not a bit happy about it because if it does go bang the job were on will really suffer. I will report in minute detail what she does. As ever feeling blessed for all the help.

Right so that gives you a starting point. It may just never have been connected up. It isn't a MOT requirement.
But using the photo further up you can see if the switch for the indicator light is there, on the Tranny box, and if the mechanical link to the spigot is there.
I expect you will find the plug just hanging off the loom, in mid air. So if the box is fitted with the switch you could just connect it up. Switch on the ignition and on the instrument panel you should see an orange light come on, looks like this,
If it stays on your diff lock IS engaged. unless the switch is fubar!
But TBH I'd just look to see if the spigot is connected to summat!

At our place in France recently I had to repair and improve a fence which involved nailing chain link two layers up to about 6 feet to hardwood, holly trees, whose bits and pieces were sticking into me from all sides, the wood was so bloody hard I would start it off with a an ornery hammer but then finish each two pronged nail off with a lump hammer.
Stretching barbed wire above it and then at the join between the two bits.
On my own.
In the heat.
No bloody fun at all.
Still it might keep the deer and the scrotes out!!

Oh and previous to that I was re paving around the pool, in 35 degree heat. Had to get up before dawn to be able to get anything done.
