does anyone know which fuse is responseable for the instrument panel lights! got no handbook, found nothing on the net, and haynes tells you nowt!

Depends on the MY, if by "instrument panel lights" you mean the instrument pack's background illumination it's F33 up to 2003 then F3 (interior fusebox) but if it's the fuse it affects the RH side lamps and all the dash/console switches and clock illumination too

Page 13.21 of Haynes for 1998 to July 2004 Diesel Disco. See a8 (very last one), then on diagram 9, page 13.29 Wiring Diagrams.
Really hard to see on the diagram, go down the right hand side to a1, a2 then look just to the left. You'll see a8 and further along the wire it ends in "see diagram 7, interior lighting (switch illumination)" where it connects to fuse 33, just as Sierrafery said! Although it looks to me as if fuse 11 could also be the problem. But then I really struggle with wiring diagrams!
