When I bought my disco it had some damage, can I just replace the damaged piece or do I need to fit a full new rear quarter?

Hi
I would suggest, a visit to your nearest scrapyard or breaking disco' and ask to cut out the required section of bodywork.
I have done similar on another car. Allow an extra 10mm for creation of "recessed overlap", some filling and cosmetic work/paint and your done.

the rear quarter and side panel are spot welded together if the same as disco 1 you could drill out spots and attach new with nuts bolts or pop rivets or just replace both rear side and quarter as a piece
