So as my Defender is doing more heavy towing nowadays, I am toying with the idea of fitting a disco 2 4.0 v8 and the disco 2 auto box. Looking at the box itself, it looks like the shifter isn't set as far back as that in the disco 1 cos I don't really want it sat where the cubby should be!

So my question being, will this gearbox go in ok, will my Defender transfer box transfer to this transmission ok.

Just toying with the idea but what else would I need to consider? What would I need in terms of ECUs? Don't want too much leccy.

I love the 200tdi as its so robust and simple, great engine but just a bit too noisy and slow for me I think for towing such a heavy load I could get a hybrid turbo on top of its mods already but then that would be around the cost of a V8 and box and out lots more strain on engine components.

Cheers.

I think the D2 shifter is linked to the box via a cable, so can be fitted wherever you like.
Mate a had a d1 v8 auto, took me out in it, to say I was disappointed is an understatement, all the talk of big effortless power is utter bollacks!
Hes into his v8s and assured me it was a god one.

Fit a 6bt :p it's robust and simple just like the 200tdi, mucho torque and it'll be great on fuel compared to the v8 and even the tdi.
Or om606 seems to be another one people rate.

Merc diesel, sound really nice
Merc do some great petrol V engines the 112 3.2 v6 and the 113 4.3 and 5.5 v8 units all are so tough its unreal you can get kits to run them in anything.
Decent power as well, 3.2 210bhp, 4.3 276bhp and the 5.5 360bhp later 5.5 had a supercharger with roughly 550bhp!
Cheap as chips as you buy the whole car, search e320 e430, e55

low compression were ,different with high compression

Me D1 V8 manual shifts nicely, I know the earlier D1 auto boxes were somewhat lazy. Would love a 6bt wow it's a bit of a job haha.

Easier than you might think now, seen as theirs gearbox/transfer box adapters available now. As well as engine mounts made to suit the original lr chassis mounts.
