Is it possible to replace / upgrade the speaker system in a 97 300tdi. I was a boy racer in my youth and would like a bit more ooomph from the sound system without having to custom install speakers/ subs etc.

Thanks, John

nip down halfrauds,15 quid for a set of ripspeed (dont laugh,im serious!) speakers that fit the front doors, they can handle up to 65rms and are kevlar coned, then go to maplins and pick up a set of tweeters and crossovers for another 15 quid and boom, perfect front setup.
then get back to halfrauds and get alpine type e 6 1/4 inch speakers, these fit the rears perfectly. maybe a little trimming involved but this is not a bother. then get an alpine head unit. bingo you have a sorted system without cutting yyour car about! hope this helps

No he won't have tweeters as standard in a disco 1. You need to get tweeters from maplins and you need one crossover per side, I have 4 speakers, 4 tweeters, 4 crossovers in mine, one of each at each corner mate

Last question, lol, the rear door speakers don't work. I have a sony head unit instead of the standard unit. Any ideas?

Thanks, John

I would imagine its because the sony headunit doesn't have 6 outputs you might have to make a choice over the rear boot speakers and the door speakers,is your an es or xs model? I didn't know 300s had them in the rear doors!

It's a bog standard 300tdi. I have a Sony CDX-GT30RN. I have fitted the plugs for the speakers but there was one left over. I assumed they were for the dashboard controls. The back of my radio looks like this if this makes it any clearer.

Thanks again, I am just trying to tie up a few wee niggles that are driving me mad

there are two laughable sub speakers and an amp in the pod on the back door, it's for the standard stereo that was in it, would be a lot of hassle to trace and rewire into an aftermarket stereo, also you'll lose all your control buttons on the driver side of the dash.

I'm currently wondering what to do with them obsolete switches, ghost busters siren.. uv lights.. low-rider suspension.. the posibilities are endless!!

the pink plug behind the stereo has two wires attached... cut off the pink plug and attach these wires to your rear speaker outputs from the stereo (a bit or splicing will be involved) and there u go... rear door speakers workking!

the other option if your handy enough is fitting a phono plug onto said two wires and plugging it directly into your subwoofer pre-out from the back of your head unit...

Do the wires from the pink block connect directly to the rear door speakers or do they go through some sort of amp? I would prfer to use the RCA outputs if possible. I am trying to find a cable that is RCA one end and bare wires the other. Lastly, there are 2 outputs, do I connect the 2 wires to centre of each output or connect 2 wires to one output? ( hope this makes sense, :) ) Are the wires going into the white block for the dashboard controls then?

Cheers, John

Right, I have cut the wires from the pink block and spliced them to the rear left speaker which is wires 7 and 8 in the block. Boot speakers kicked in straight away. Works great on radio but when I play a CD then I revert back to the four front and rear speakers only, no boot speakers. Do I need to connect through the subwoofer pre out to get the sound through the cd player after all.

P.S. Definately going to go shopping for some new speakers and tweeters before I blow the standard ones up.

Cheers, John

Hi there,
Your rear speakers only working on the radio is probably that the power to the rear amp is connected to the electic ariel 12v output and on some radios (sony i think) when you switch to another input source the power to the ariel is cut off and the ariel retracts - i found this on the Audi 80 Cab i own - took me ages to work out what was wrong. Hope this helps.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy, did you workout how to fix it? lol My disco doesn't seem to have an aerial. Would it make any difference connecting to the outputs?

John
