Disco 1/ RRC Wheel Bearings The best make??

Just replaced a couple of wheel bearings on the bobtail.
I've gathered a fair quantity of bearing parts, seals, gaskets and washers etc (the wonders of ebay 'bargains').....

However, having a check on the parts I had before I did the jobs, I've noticed minor differences with different makes. The Britpart bearings that came as part of a kit look different to the Timkin ones I actually used. The races drifted into the hub were pretty much the same, but the roller bearings themselves and the housing for them looked a little more 'fragile' on the Britpart ones, not much, but enough to notice the difference side by side with the Timkin branded ones...

So, my question...
Does anyone know what the best/beefiest bearing sets are you can get for RRC/Disco1 standard fitting??

Needless to say, any working bearing is better than the bearing bits I took out!. Just interested to find out for next time......and there will be a next time, as they get a fair amount of abuse off road

Cheers. Yeah, I had assumed (perhaps daft I know) before the comparison that they were all the same. A wheel bearing is a wheel bearing, right?!...in fact I nearly fitted the Britpart ones as they were the first boxes I laid my hands one, and wouldn't had noticed the difference had I not pulled out a couple of Timkin ones laying under them.

youd think a bearing is a bearing yeah - depends how long you want them to last i guess
i assume the timkins are made of proper metal & not recycled washing machines

Britpart ones are ok to get you out the **** if you need some and have nothing else but the general concensus is they dont much longer than 1000-1500 miles

Well, I'd agree, use Timkin. Might aswell cos they're the best and not expensive.

That's probably why I've got Britpart wheel bearings all round on my Disco.

Have had them on for around 18 months I reckon. Have done around 1000 miles I reckon, off road 75% of the time, with 10" negative offset 'bearing killer' wheels.

After fitting new bearings all round as part of complete axle overhauls, I had to nip the bearings up for the first six months. Sometimes it was one wheel, sometimes two, but usually after coming back from pnp I would have a bit of play.

Since that 6 month period however they have been bang tidy. I recently had a rear hub seal start leaking so I took the opportunity to strip and clean the hub. The bearings, I was delighted to discover, we're perfect, so they went straight back in.

Is it a fairly easy job to change the wheel bearings..?

If they're not seized/welded on then it's not difficult, but it helps if you're not a cack handed, soft as a baby's bottom handed, simple minded fool also

Funk me i must have been lucky then, coz even i can do em, and i fulfil all the requirements of thems that shouldnt

As a side note i use SKF bearings on mine as they are easier to get hold of over here, pricey but last a bloody good length of time, a bit of nipping up when first seated but after the initial adjustment they have been spot on.

got to do the rears on the disco this weekend as since i have had this one i have only replaced the fronts as there was no play in the rears at all, and then all of a sudden in the last 3 weeks the back wheel feels like its about to fall off, i do hammer the thing though, 600km on the road each week and 8-12 hours off road each weekend.

That I am not.. Rough and dry builders hands that soak up and hold onto old oil and grease..
I need to change a wheel stud, and the advisories on the MOT said something about wheel bearings so I shall have a go..

Sandpaper is the only thing that truly gets my hands clean after delving into my Landy

you will need a 52 mm socket for the hub nuts - if you dont have one they are a fiver on ebay

I have a pair in mine at the moment as it was a stop gap till my timkin ones turned up, I have done around 800 miles on them already and starting to get nervous but if it can get me through the winter I will be happy
