Disco 1 radio keeps blowing fuses

Hi there, I'm pretty new to this game so be kind.

I've got a 1998 Disco 1 300TDi and, as the title says, the fuse for the radio, number 3, keeps blowing.

Does anyone know of a common fault which causes shorts in the radio system and whether it can be easily repaired?

I'm pretty capable with electrics and do it for a job so you can be a bit technical if you like.

Thanks for any help you guys might have to offer, this site has very often held the answer to a tricky problem in the past

is it the radio blowing fuse 3 or the antenna amp is fed from the same fuse or damaged cable running to amp water ingress in amp:doh:

The head unit is protected by is own fuse, so as above and also the tailgate sub amp (if u have one) is powered from the same fuse.

I didn't know the amps were fed from the same supply - although, now I think about it, it is logical!

You may be right Mystery person, there could be water ingress in some part of the system, I had sort of suspected this to be the case. Both sunroofs had, until this weekend, leaked pretty badly but I've sealed them up now so no more unexpected showers!

I'll see if I can use your diagram to find what's wrong and post back what I find.

SUCCESS!!!

Found the problem, you were right, Discool, it was the power supply to the sub-woofer amp that was dodgy, as you can see in the picture which I think I've attached.

Thank you for the diagram and picture of the antenna amp Mystery Man, that was very useful as it gave a good indication of what was fed from the fuse and where the wire went.

It was a good job I found it because I also noticed that there was about 3 inches of insulation missing from one of the central locking solenoid wires in the back door too

Both are now fixed and I can enjoy listening to the radio again, cheers guys!

Hi all
1995 300tdi
F6 in the Sat fuse (20A) keeps blowing. This feeds-according to Haynes-trailer socket,radio and interior lights the short goes when I pull out the plug from the main fuse board that feeds the mirrors,head lamp levellers and a bunch or wires going towards the binnacle.This fried the MFU as well.Would it be logical to take out the radio and check the connections

sounds more like a short in the headlamp or mirrors to me. But as with any wiring fault it's a case of elimination & inspection. to find the cause

Not really the radio connections are clipped plug and sockets so should be tight, unless they have been disturbed at some time, but it's easy to pull the unit out and have look.
Trailer sockets are always suspect.

The mirrors and levelers work ok so they shouldent be causing the problem.I disconnected the trailer socket as it was corroded so it looks like something in the binnacle.I will investigate further over the weekend
