Just got my D1 3.9 V8i ES 1999 model and the original exhaust is on its last legs.

I would like to get a full stainless system for it but the question I have revolves around the Cats,

Can I get away with the MOT emissions test on a thru pipe or do I have to replace the Cats as well?

I dought if you will get past the emissions test without cats the max fast idle CO for your disco is only be 0.20. It would be ok running on gas if that system is fitted

How come you have a 1999 model D1, LR stoped making them in 1998 and 1998 was the last model for D1's. 1998/99 the D2s were around.
 
1998 D1 models are easy identified as they have a high level brake light as standard. Some 98 models also had 'Boost' alloys, headlamp leveling, grey tinted glass instead of green, so not that much difference from the 97 model.

Do you still have the orig exhaust on yours? Both the centre and rear boxes on mine look knackered and there is plent of corrosion on the front pipes where the cats are.

I have been looking at the Rimmer full system but they advise that cats are 'non-standard', is this good or bad ?
 
I thought that all petrol-engined cars had to have cats, not just to pass an emissions test, but it was law to actually have them in place on the vehicle. Unlike diesels where the law stipulates an emissions result rather than specifying that cats should be in place.

No my back box started rattling last year at 11 years old, so I got a cat back system from Janspeed and fitted that.
On previous cars I have replaced the mild steel backbox one year then the following year it was the mid box then backbox again etc etc but no more now stainless and fit and forget. :)

The trouble with tubular manifolds is the heat from them, making the engine bay very warm.

So your orig Cats are still doing the job then...... maybe I'll wait for mine to actually fail an MOT and go for the Cat back option too.

No thats not the case as petrol vehicle before 1993 are not required to have cats fitted. ( I know u ment modern cars fitted with cats)
It's ok to present a vehicle for MOT which has had it's cat/s removed but it will be tested to the emissions limits applicable that vehicle as if it had still been fitted with a cat/s.
