can any recommend a cheap insurance company?

I am 40 years old, buying a 1994 Disco 7 seaters tdi Auto, no convictions or claims, 10 years no claims and the best I can get is £310!

the car is only costing me £1000!

Also my usual company says that its securuty is invalid and wont even cover me!

PS I live in the lowest car crime City in the UK! (according to the insurance industry)

it because Series 1 landrovers dont have thatcham cat 1 or cat 2 alarms fitted, this is why Aviva wont insure it - so now I have to weigh up the cost of fitting a cat 1 alarm vs paying an extra £500 a year insurance on a £1000 Disco!

That explains why Direct Line have written to me asking for proof of thatcham alarm. When applying by phone I was asked by the young lady if it had a thatcham approved alarm and I replied that I did not know but it did have a standard landrover alarm, as is one of the options on the Direct Line web forms.
She then got a little shirty with me, and I with her and I gave up and did it via Internet. They have now said my car is insured but not covered for theft until I show it has thatcham alarm

Give Adrian Flux a call. They will cover you for off roading which is always helpful considering you drive a vehicle designed to go off road...

I don't get why people choose to insure their landy's with the usual insurance companies given that they won't cover for off roading!

Probably because some of the so called specialist companies don't know their arse from their elbow?

I had one lot trying to tell me that my Discovery had to have been built in Japan as it was a Jap import!!

Also this "offroad cover" is an interesting one. I actually asked one lot who's description was green laning not offroading! I pointed out to them that as a green lane was a public highway that I needed tax, MOT and insurance for therefore why were they making out that they were offering an extra?

I also had this in reverse with other (non specialist) companies saying that they didn't cover for green laning until I pointed out the legal issues, they went back to their underwriters and came back to me having put it in writing that I was covered for driving green lanes!

I'd imagine that a lot of people who off-road ie: pay n' play will more than likely get their car dragged onto the nearest main road and recovered by RAC/AA etc and then rebuild at their expense should their LR break down badly.

As for having "off road insurance cover" on your normal policy ... most companies consider green laning AS off roading! Try having a conversation with the dumb ass rep on the phone, explaining it's perfectly legal to drive them and that your "normal" policy should cover it ... it makes for an interesting conversation:doh:

Hi mate you could try N.F.U. Mutual. get it through google and select local office location and give them a phone, do not do it on line. Cheers

I got a policy through Lancaster. It was with LV and is called their Highway 4X4 policy. Only covers second motors, maximum of (I think) 5,000 miles per year, but DOES specifically include greenlaning.
'94 Disco valued at £1500 - parked on the street not far from some of the more dubious parts of Edinburgh - £204 fully comp.

Hi try the NFU insurance they are good

Hmm, I take that with a large grain of salt. For instance they WOULD NOT ENTERTAIN insuring a classic Nissan Patrol just because it had alloy wheels with 31 10.5 15 tyres. (These are not actually bolt-on-goodies from the local spot-lamp shop they are genuine Nissan parts - a Nissan Plus-Pack actually) Perhaps they have been watching YouTube and think I'm the same as the pikey!

They said that they would only insure the Patrol if it had the basic steel wheels and not the Plus-Pack wheels but millions of vehicles have alloy wheels so WTF.

In future if a vehicle has OEM supplied alloy wheels I think my answer to "Is the vehicle standard" is going to be in the affirmative as now I'm an OAP I'm getting rather tired of being given the 17 year old lager-lout routine.

As to the insurance industry I think it needs a jolly good shake-up as AFAIK it is still a laissez-faire industry that polices (doesn't police actually) itself. One truly rotten story that I heard from a locksmith concerned an electrical goods store that was broken into. The locks did not have the British Standard Kitemark so the insurers wouldn't pay even though the burglars broke in through the roof! The Loss Adjuster saved his company £20,000 with his clever trick! Rotten to the core I'd say.

As there are plenty of locks on this planet that are equal to or better than the BSI five lever and as the locks were never attacked it was basically a legal scam. Rotten to the core I'd say.

Please see this door which is not BSI approved or kitemarked so presumably they still wouldn't pay!
