Hello, does anyone know if discovery 1 headlights can be adjusted from RHD to LHD or if they have to be changed? I'm trying to register a Rhd vehicle in Europe and I changed the headlights as they were pointing the wrong way, with ones from a LHD Discovery 2. I was a bit skeptical though when I noticed that they had the exact same markings on them as the old ones. I didn't get to try them in the dark until the registration inspection and they failed it as they were pointing just like the old ones. I just want to know if to order a LHD pair or if they are adjustable from those mountings they have. Cheers.

The thing about headlights is that they have a "kick up" to one side or the other, so the bit that points towards the oncoming traffic casts a flat beam whereas the other side has a kickup, towards the kerb or hedge. On the other side of the road the kick up will shine in the eyes of oncoming drivers. When you drive abroad this kick up is the bit you need to mask off with insulating tape or summat. And bizarrely it is diagonally opposite to where you would expect to see it.
I have heard that if you do this you can pass the inspection but this may be down to the awkwardness of the inspector.

Do you mean something like eurolites or inside that reflecting cone? Thanks

I'm talking about old fashioned single glass headlights as in on a D1 or and older D2 i.e. pre facelift. If you have a later one then......oops!
But yes D1 headlights had the kick ups and can be masked. But there are places you can get LHD D1 headlights secondhand. If you were in France I could point you at a guy who sells secondhand bits.
Beam deflectors are sh!te and fall off anyway. A triangle of insulation tape is far better and lasts a lot longer.
Read far enough down in this thread and you will see it described.

Hey,

They are the older type yes, the late D1/early D2 glass headlights. I'm trying to register this one in Estonia, not many Land Rovers in this side of Europe unfortunately, I actually imported it from Finland from a guy who imported it from UK many years ago but never got around to registering it. Thank you for the information!

You need to install replacement head lamps with the LHD units for a D1 with the following STC1235 RH LHD & STC1236 LH LHD, which are still asymmetrical which is required to give the addition illumination in your lane, plus a bit of readjustment job done.

Thank you, discool, I was just looking into buying another pair.

Its the best option, as your question has been asked before. and your test inspector will or should require a permanent solution.
So not the temporary “get around “ that I’ve used on my two week trips abroad or even with the short night time run back to the port on day shopping trips in the past.

just to add a tip, get a couple of these, i had a couple fall apart when I removed my headlamps from their fixing for the first time.

Yes, they seem notorious as I've had a few break but also the adjustment bolts are really rusty so I'll need to get some of those too. And the plugs for the bulbs are corroded beyond belief, I think I'll have to change every other part on this landy...

When changing the plugs on the back, get ceramic ones, much better ...

Hi, Dippypud,

I'm not sure what they look like, do you happen to have a picture or link or part number? Thank you for the suggestion, I'm a fan of not cutting corners when it comes to a car that I will keep.

So.. the best i could find are some 200tdi head lamps. My question is, provided I get those black brackets and the signal lamps as well, can they be easily mounted on a 300tdi? I dont like the look of them and ive been reading they're not as good but I'm desperate for now.

I replaced one of my 2000 MY Disco 2 headlights with one from my 1998 MY Disco 1 300tdi and it is fine. I expect the 200 tdi will be the same but I cannot be sure.

I did the same the other way around, the 300tdi ones are almost exactly the same as the early td5, but i found a pair for sale from a 200tdi and the assembly looks very different so i want to make sure before ending up with a possible third pair of extra headlamps that I dont need :)

i'm sure @discool will be able to help you.:):)

Hi,

Nevermind, I called Green Oval and they said that it would require some body work and changing the grille. That's quite a bit of work for a downgrade in my opinion. I've called over 50 places today and most of them don't have the headlights, there's one place that sells a right head lamp, but can't find a left anywhere. Landies are really not popular in northern Europe :(
