l am having problems with my 1997 disco 1 300 tdi auto....the check engine light is on and its in limp mode,l am guessing one of the sensors is playing up-l suspect the mass airflow meter-but after checking around it seems that these are no longer availiable from anywhere, does anyone know how to test these?,also, it seems that the same is true regarding the number four injector-has a built in sensor-,if this is so,is there a fix or do l get rid??,l know parts can be hard to find, but if there really are none availiable now there seems to be little point in keeping the car, thanks in advance, jack.

Don't be a defeatist man. You can pick mac sensors up, I always have a spare.. just check there's isn't a build up of crap on the element inside the sensor, if so go on eBay and buy a proper can of mad sensor cleaner.
Injector you can't get but take it in somewhere and get it reconditioned. When the EDC disco is running right it's a cracking motor. There's always a way to sort them, or pick up manual and change it if the motor is a good one.

What makes you suspect the airflow meter? when mine went into limp mode it turned out the be the temp sensor on the top of the head. Leaving it disconnected got rid of limp mode. I did replace the sensor but no joy so it's been unplugged ever since.

Read up on the MAF faulty systems it's a common thing as regards not running well. I was just following up on his question with relevance to the MAF. Mine never went into limp mode but have found it can effect the running.

thanks guys, the engine is fine otherwise, the temp gauge in the cab seems to be working ok,engine never shows any sign of getting hot and gauge stays just below mid point,so l guess its a trip to the diagnostic machine,l am certain its a sensor prob but there are so many of them, all vital, then theres the throttle position switch....pver £100 notes last l saw!!!,will post again with the diagnostic results, cheers, jack.

The EDC engine has 2 temp sensors. The standard sensor feeds the temp gauge like a non-edc engine but in addition to this, on the top of the head under the engine cover, there is an additional temp sensor which is only used by the EDC unit during it's startup cycle. Try unplugging it and starting the engine to see if the check light goes out.

I don't know about the Disco 1, but if the temperature gauge is anything like the one on the Disco 2 then all it indicates is the presence of some heat. It'll stay at the mid point until the cows come home and generally will only show hot when things are too hot. The only way to get an idea of how hot things are is to use an additional temperature gauge or by reading the live data on a code reader.

OP:- IMHO, The unavailability of number 4 injector ( ERR3337 ), is a major PITA. When mine "let the smoke out", I was quoted £1K to build one from the relevant parts "off" a freelander o_O- this may, or may not, have been complete rubbish, but it was from a reputable firm, and no one else could offer another solution...

So, I changed the FIP, and the injectors, fitted a full width intercooler, and now have more power, more torque, and it uses less fuel than the EDC. Oh yeah, and chucked the EDC 'puter in the bin too :D

AFAIK, The instrument cluster temp gauge is the same as the manual 300's - this is why the EDC has its own system... it was an add on half way house to increase perceived poor performance of the diesel auto....:)

If you include your location in your profile - you might find find someone local to you with diagnostics.....

Guys,so very grateful for all the advice!!,as soon as the damned rain stops l will check out the temp sensor,l am based in chepstow south wales, think there is an injector guy in newport, will let you all know if there is,all the best, jack.

Hi all,it would seem that both my MAF sensor and the fuel temprature sensor have both shuffled off!!,anyone know where to obtain both of these items??,also, where does the fuel temp sensor live?,l have been given to believe that these parts have long been unavailiable,so it looks like a conversion to a manual pump is going to be the only option, how big a job is it?,seems to me that that will be the best idea in the long run, cheers for now, jack.

Be careful when buying the Maf it's crucial the element inside is nice and clean not bent or broken.
To be honest on eBay I saw they were for the V8 but not sure if they are the same, I keep a few I can look if I have. Good one for you. On the fuel sensor try JGS I got a couple from them,
Or bite the bullet and do the change. I will say that when the EDC is running right it's a lot better system, but can be a pain if not.

Yeah true dat, wasn't there someone on here who did re-furbs ?

The sensor is on the fuel rail, it's not pressurised and won't leak when disconnected just remove the multi plug and take out the sensor.
