disco 1 fly by wire

how big a job is it?

Biggest issue for me was getting a standard pump I could trust. I bought a whole disco, which had a full width IC, and had been tuned to 145HP. ( PO had used this to excess, without maintenance, and unsurprisingly, blown the engine !) - and swapped it all over.
Got a load of other bits too, like alloys with new tyres on !, and a load of rusty crud too!!

Done at the same time as a cam belt change, its not a bad job at all - you need to change the injectors too - as the EDC ones run at a higher pressure - you'll also need the pump brackets for the kickdown cable - and these were only available from LR when I did mine - £100 too - the robbing g*ts.

Driven carefully, mine is now very good on fuel, and if the need arises, can surprise folk at traffic lights too :D

Its over 10K miles ago now, since I did mine, and 2 MOT's, and there have been no problems.
PM me if you want to:)

thanks grezzer,l thought the fuel temp sensor was built into the inj/pump?,at least thats what my haynes manual says,do you have an address or phone number for JGS?,cheers,jack....dunno how to pm you but l am definately interested in a good maf if you have one!!,is there any way to test or repair these things??

Morning 1BFG,l am rapidly coming to the idea that changing to manual is probably going to be the way forward,l am still clinging to the hope that l can find the bits l need to fix my current probs but that doesnt mean l wont have more probs down the road, mechanical stuff l can cope with being an ex tractor mechanic:D,but this here electronickery is way above my pay grade,so any info you may have will be very welcome,l have been offered a pump for free but its a bit of a smoker,so would need a rebuild, probably going for a recon pump will be the best bet,l need to put a new turbo cartridge in too, mine has leaking seals,so will plan on doing the lot at the same time.

Morning !! one of the things to bear in mind with the replacement pump is whether its a plain VE pump, or the VE DDS (sp?) pump, which has some electronic carp inside it. IIRC, this can be chucked away, but I have zero experience of them - some body on here will know - I fitted a plain jane VE from a 96 manual. SWMBO's 97 manual has the DDS pump, so ..... your call!!

is there an easey way to identify which pump l have?,l plan onusing a recon pump if l go this route, which is looking more and more likely, thanks for your help, will keep you updated.

I don't know at what point (if at all) that Land Rover went OBDII compliant. But if your vehicle is, then you can get a diagnostics app for about a tenner for your phone (free for some features) plus a wifi transmitter to plug in (15 quid off ebay) and you will be able to diagnose yourself. I have the basic set up which I use for my other cars, but like I say, not sure if/when they started using OBDII

Worth a check though, as the set up comes in handy for most modern cars, plus if you get an app for the ipad you can play about with a computerised dashboard. :D

I'm not sure about exactly what diagnostics facilities are available for the 300tdi, but as far as I know the diesel Discovery didn't become fully OBDII compliant until the release of the Disco 3 in mid 2004. The petrol Disco was some time earlier but I'm unable to say when.
Prior to that, the diagnostics were largely particular to LR and consequently specialised diagnostic code readers such as the Nanocom. Hawkeye, Lynx and Testbook were required to get sensible results. With cheaper code readers, you might be lucky and get a result for a problem on the engine ECU but it's unlikely that it would communicate successfully with the other ECUs, or it might indicate a fault where none exists. Unfortunately none of them come in at 15 quid off ebay!

Agreed. :)We run 2 300Tdi D1's. we have Hawkeye. Sadly, this was bit more than £15 - :( but we did get it via evil bay :D "Generic" code readers, even the likes of Snapon solus, and Bosch something or other were completely unable to talk to the EDC in the D1 auto when the needle lift sensor failed.
