Right then, can I simply remove a 93/94 disco rear axle and fit it in my 90?
Should I do the front at the same time?
What are the pros/cons?

I am aware that the 90 ones will be 10 spline and the discos 24 etc but would there be any problems that may occur?

Any advice given is much appreciated

Cheers

I'd be interested in know about this too as I have a disco1 on my drive for spares....

So the entire rear axle simply attaches to the existing prop shaft and brake hoses attach so thats the rear sorted.....

On the front the front prop attaches as do the hoses....... What about steering?

you may need your old drag link

I did it a while ago.

On the rear it's an easy enough swap .. but that depends on the brake fittings and 'other stuff' not being rusted together!!

On the front you have to change brake pipe routing, Disco pipe goes to the front of the springs, Defender goes to the rear, use the Disco radius arms as they may be different widths.

I also used the Disco drop arm and steering rod 'cos they were HD. The following has enough detail I think .. ;)

Some Discos were 10 spline as well.

What about braking ability? I have recently driven two 90s fitted with disco axles and wasn't too pleased with their brakes. Apparently disco axles have smaller calipers (hence smaller pads). My 90's fitted with 50th anniversary axles (having vented discs and 110 calipers) and it has much better stopping power.

The rears of my 90 were drums .. it's now way better at stopping than the 90 or Disco before the axle swap. A Disco is nearly 1/2 a tonne heavier don't forget!

A 90 with additional vented discs and 110 calipers isn't exactly standard then .. but that's easy enough to do using Disco vented discs and 110 calipers .. it's what a lot do to upgrade their Disco discs anyway. For mine, off-road mostly, IMHO I feel I'm better with solid discs instead of having somewhere for the mud to ooze from or get stuck in!!

I'd suggest someone's not fitted something properly if Disco axles and brakes don't stop a 90 better than standard.

Mine used to stop, now it stops when I actually want it to .. ;)

Also discovery axles have a three bolt flange ( I love that word) because of the rubber donut jobber whereas a tratter has a four bolt one

Not all of them .. and even though mine's a later one I'd already converted it to 4 bolt .. :)
