Hi, I'm looking at replacing my power steering pump and have found one on Fleabay. The guy asked me to confirm the direction of rotation of the pulley looking at it from the front of the engine as it the " mount needs to turn clockwise".
Surely with the correct part number for the 300Tdi it will correct?
Despite that how do I determine which way it turns as all the bits are off, up to and including, the water pump?

Google image search the front of an engine, look at the belt routing and you can work it out... I believe from memory it is CCW.

I don't understand why he is asking what way it goes, if it's a 300tdi pump it's a 300tdi pump.

Surely the direction of rotation is important in order for the pump to be pumping in the right direction.
Would it be best to suck or blow? Answers on a postcard please? :)

Although TDi pump is a TDi pump is a valid argument. Fits a TDi but pumps the wrong way might not be good.

Dan I agree but if you a selling a Defender 300Tdi pump and quoting the right part number surely it will be the right pump for that vehicle? I'm assuming the 300Tdi's were all built to the same spec including rotation? But, from my mil background "assumptions are the mothers of all f@&k ups"

A google search pulled this gem forwards......
"Instead of pumping the hot coolant out of the engine past the thermostat to cool the coolant in the radiator, the water pump will force the cold coolant out of the radiator towards the thermostat causing it to close so no coolant enters the hot engine to cool it off. Can you say "overheat"?

And you-tube says this.....

I would be careful in my choice if I were you.

Look at the fan belt, and that should confirm that, looking at the front of the engine, all your gubbins should turn clockwise, unless you have had a MiG23E engine fitted, in which case your Landy could be ever-so-slightly overpowered!
Most engines turn clockwise looking at the front.

Yes the direction of rotation is critical but, but what the hell is the guy trying to sell - personally I would probably walk away from this sale. It's like buying a starter motor for a 300tdi but the guy says what direction do you want it to turn. Well I am sorry but if a part is sold for a particular application is really must meet some basic critical criteria or else it is not fit for purpose.

We have addressed this much (read above), but to further clarify look again at the front of a 300TDI engine, the PAS pump is not pulled by the belt starting from a left position, pulling it CW existing from a right of entry point, but rather right to left, thus this pump turns CCW.

It all depends on belt routing which way a particular ancillary runs.

What the blazes does this have to do with a PAS pump?

Thanks - I like the idea of a MIG engine in there!
See the doc attached - I drew this before removing all the pulleys etc. It would appear, as you say, everything should turn clockwise except the PAS! Now I'm really confused!

What's got you confused... A lot of ancillaries spin in different directions to the crank. Basically, just buy a PAS pump for a 300tdi from someone who is not trying to make them in his garage or something!
