All this talk of electrical fires is worry me! Have got three things running direct off my battery. My radio cassestte, my interior lights (2)and what must be a booster from my ariel.

Should i stick a fuse in just after the live to run all three and if so what size fuse would you think suits:confused:

Cheers
Paul

I'd say get a fuse box, live into that then you can have your different fuses for each feed and you still have the option for easy add ons later on if you want..

Stretch is right, fit a fuse holder and run everything from there.

If you have the £££: Devon 4x4 Off Road - Marine-Grade Fuseholder : BS5028 : Off Road Equipment from Devon 4x4

1 feed and the reast is easy. They have a similar unit for £15 which isnt waterproof, thats what i have fitted.

alternatively: Devon 4x4 Off Road - 4 way fuseholder : FB4 : Off Road Equipment from Devon 4x4

one of these can be picked up off ebay or here cheap enough. I would unplug them for now or sods law, it will catch fire before you get around to sorting it!

Hi, how did you get into you compartment to feed the wires? Need to find a way to get wires to the back of my defender 90..

Cheers

put a fuse as close to the battery as you can... even a big 60 amp one will do the trick and stop the LR igniting if it shorts.

Yeah - a nail will do - dont forget to use 3amp lighting flex to go to the battery!!!
Wot a load of bollix - always use the correct fuse that blows at a lower rating than the wire is likely to melt at- and use the correct rated wire:).

You gotta love the mans diplomacy!!! :D:D

But he is 100% right, use the right wire and the correct fookin fuse!!!!
Have you ever seen how long it takes for a wiring loom to go from fine to completly fooked because a higher amp fuse has been put in, trust me it aint long, I reckon about 1-2 secs depending on how wrong the fuse was

Hmm, perhaps i should explain this better...

If he is fitting a distribution box, then he should have a large, high ampage fuse in the ever higher amp power supply to the box, near the battery.

Then, as he takes each power feed from the distro box, he uses the correct fuse for each accessory, with appropriate wire. e.g. 3 amp wire for a CB, with a 1.5amp fuse in it.

Where i suggested a large fuse i assumed he was going to use some sort of power distro block, at which point you will require a wire that will take a lot of current - if you are going to load up a pile of lights, a radio, air horns maybe, etc etc then this can very quickly add up to a lot of current.

And yes, i have seen how quickly looms catch fire, and it is surprisingly fast.

I knew what yu meant Boydy.
It was a bit of a ****take - yu and me both know the state of some of the electrics on landies - and I wouldnt be surprised if someone did exactly what I suggested. I just wanted to highlight the fact that the electrics should be seen as a system - not as isolated units with a "Laissez-faire" approach to putting in, what could be very current intensive units. no offense meant.

Well lads have disconnected what was there and am saving for a marine box from devon.

Am having a fully recon 200tdi engine fitted in place of my old td next week, thus funds a bit tight!

Think that will sort my towing issues?

Suppose the lightning of the wallet will reduce the weight a bit any way!:)
