Ever since ive had my 90, the dipstick has been loose, Serviced it when I first got it and put the correct amount of oil back in. about 6.7 litres or so if I remember right.
Anyway a couple of months ago I checked oil and it seemed a bit low, so topped it up. Now think there is to much in. see photo.
Checked last week and the dipstick tube came out in my hand.
Read up about them and seems a common problem, the previous owner had just put a small jubelee clip where the olive should have been but it has moved up the tube a bit when I have been checkig oil, hence why I thought I was low.
went to replace tube tonight, the old nut that holds the tube in was not tightened in properly as it loosened with my fingers, replaced with new tube but can not get the nut to tighten right down very tight squeeze, is there an easy way to do get at this nut as it needs to go about another qauter inch or so??.
This is oil level now, plus the nut has to go down a little so probably higher then this. Could I have damaged engine running with this much oil in????

In a word ...No, it'd have to be a fair bit higher than that to cause damage, just drain a bit off, or if yours is like mine wait for it to drip everywhere and by tomorrow it'll be nearer the low mark than the high, my tratter is the vehicle equivalent of Hansell and Grettle

Glad to hear that, was worried id damaged the engine.
Forgot to mention it is a defender 200tdi engine, need to get that nut on the tube tightened right down, can just say fit my hand in never mind a spanner:mad:.

Hi Border, I have a similar problem, ie very loose dipstick tube on my 200tdi engine, by your experience what would I need to put mine right, and how did you tighten the bottom nut up,, although I haven't looked yet, I can imagine there is not very much space for a spanner. Also I'm worried  my engine uses no oil.
( by the way my engine was fitted to my 1987 90 in 2002, ), would anyone know how I could recognise a defender 200tdi, against a discovery one please.

I believe that the blocks are identical the main difference is the position of the turbo and because of this the exhaust system has to be modified to fit a discovery engine into a Defender due to the position of the engine mount

that little extra oil would have no ill effect you need a lot to cause problems

the bit at the front of the engine where the air con bolts to are different on the defender it is at an angle and on the discovery it is flat.

Check the security of the oil dipstick tube, sometimes they work loose (the small olive on the bottom loose's it's grip) & can let the tube move further into the sump..

The problem is you can tighten the nut as much as you like but if the olive does not grip the tube it will still be loose.
A new olive can help,I got one from a plumbing store.
