Got a 300tdi manual with an R380 box. Wont engage any gears unless in diff lock. When out of difflock it just grinds away when in gear. Any gear, high or low it wont engage. In difflock drives with no noises. Thoughts?

Oxford. Never had serious trouble.... rebuilt engine, all sorts but never touched a gearbox. If it was in an axle wouldn't it drive in non difflock? Also why quiet in difflock. Can you explain what is going on.

OK... Confused. When the centre diff is locked it drives. Locking the diff only effects the transferbox doesn't it? When disengaged it wont. The movement of the centre lever allows it to engage. How does engaging difflock effect any other part of the system? If one half shaft in the rear axle was broken would there be no drive?

Difficult to explain this...

If you've bust a halfshaft (the shaft which goes inside the axle from the differential in the middle, to the wheel at the end) as has been suggested, with the diff unlocked, all the power will be going along the 'path of least resistance', so for example if you've got a bust rear halfshaft, the transfer box will be sending all of the power through the rear prop shaft and you won't be moving due to the broken shaft in the axle. Don't ask me why, that's just how it works.

Now when you lock the diff, it forces the transfer box to send power equally through both axles, so you're effectively operating in 2 wheel drive mode, and are able to move.

So I guess the test is.... Put in 1st with no difflock on. If props are turning then the broken halfshaft is in the axle with the turning prop. If no props turning... different problem?

with the handbrake off, in gear, difflock on, jack up each corner in turn and try to rotate the wheel. the one that turns is where you've got the problem.
(chock the other wheels to stop it running away).

when you've done that, come back to us.
