Hi gents hope you can shed bit of light on what i should be looking at,purchased p38 4.6 Avimore(ltd edition),she is reluctant to start catches then dies, great smell of fuel as if over choking, has been sitting for a while had few faults on the dash one of which was key battery low.Have replaced the batteries in the key fob and also fitted new main battery, once running is fine no misfires or any knocking but if turned off goes through whole arse about starting thing HELP!:)

i would look at plugs and leads as a first point! if its been sat a while then they could have gone past thier servicable life!

hi what faults are showing? is it popping when you start it? if you can give us a bit more to go on and tell us where you are and welcome j

Hi guys,no popping just catches then dies, when it does start it idles very low then when reved picks up and settles to normal idle, there are no fault codes for the engine they were as said before key battery low and windows not set etc, have now replaced main vehicle battery and reset all the windows and sun roof. One other thing is that the radio code needs to be inputted but the bars on the display aren't flashing,do i need to get new radio or is this solvable,an on south coast in brightonhave car up at where i work in gatwick.Have already replaced plugs and leads, plugs were very sooted up when removed,is there a cams sensor? Was thinking maybe something to do with the airflow meter but not knowing much about these need so help,am a truck technician by trade so not complete virgin just need to know where to look, thanks guys:)

yes got cam senser and crank senser i would doubt it is crank senser cam senser poss also mas senser is poss. on radio try pushing band and see if bars come on j

yes i just changed mine thats why i asked if it was popping i had miss and back fire but no prob starting if you get it up to running temp stop it unplug senser and it starts it could well be mas senser it just unplugs no need to take senser out lets know how you get on j

rc i been thinking about your prob dont think its your mas as you would get code with lean banks this leaves cam senser the only one i have not had to change yet befor you try and start it have a play with cam senser wires lets know also when you get it started try unplug mas see if it runs any better lets know j

crank sensor will also bring up symptoms like this, mine was touching some of the tangs and the metal ring they are on, it would not run smooth. you can check by removing the bottom plate or cps from the bell housing and visually checking.

its doubtfull this has happened to your unless its disintegrated or someone has has the engine and box apart recently!

Throttle Pot - had similar problems with mine, changes MAF, Crank shaft sensor and then the Throttle pot. The new TP cured it.

Thanks guys, have managed to get hold of ethos(snap on diagnostic)to check for fault codes must admit never even thought about the throttle position sensor, should have really had a p38 about 5 years ago which had hic-cups that ended up being the throttle pot, does it need to be calibrated or is it plug and play?
