Hi was trying to recover a friend of mine last night and think ive manged to blow my front diff :( just woundering how hard of a job is it to get the diff out its a 300tdi 1995 thanks

Not to bad of a job. Unbolt hubs from were it bolts to axle casing (6 or 7 14mm bi hex bolts) if I remember rightly. And pull out just enough that the half shafts come out of the diff, Then unbolt the diff as normal.

Just got the diff out thanks to your help got it out but theres nothing ovisley wrong with it but pretty confidnt that it is the diff at fault is there anythink i should be looking for

When i was putting it in gear an pulling off looking underneath you could see it just spinning on the diff flange with left hand down and making a screching noise and juddering like it was trying to catch

Checked the shafts and cv everythink seems to be ok so thats what bought me to the diff aswell but these not alot i can see with the diff apart from but it may just be me if i put pressure on the shaft goin into the diff it locks the diff up but that might be me

Diff flange turns ok an looks ok splines ok not rounded that is what i was expecting the splines to be rounded the only thing i can put it down to is the diff when its under load thers somthing not right i will try an upload pics tomorrow

Just put the new diff in still no good :( checked cvs before putting it found ok but now after testing it after putting the diff in it does seem like there is somthing wrong with the cv like its trying to spin but couldn't see anything visible wrong with the cv

Iv had a few broken cvs. Trying to work it out was tricky because when I had the wheel off and tried to turn the hub it felt solid but with the wheel on it gave enough leverage for it to jump. If you try putting the car in gear and jack up 1 wheel at a time then try spinning the wheel. It might take a lot of force but it should spin and show which cv is knackered. Failing that you'll need to strip each cv and have a close look for cracks.

Mark

Ive decided to give it a rest for today but gonna strip it down in the morning again how is the cv attached to the half shaft is it a clip like on a cars cv joint

i said worn stub axle because the same happened to me.

I kept getting a high amount of revs with no go, sometimes on a hill climb under hard acceleration. Worn stub axle caused slippage, i thought it was a half shaft at 1st.
