Hi All,

Im having a bit of a carry on with my rear pinion seal. I have a late 200tdi which has ftc5258 on the front and frc8220 on the back. So I have both seals now.

While pushing the new FRC8220 on the back, it seems to have pushed the metal sleeves that sit in the hole back. One sleeve i got out, the other is a bit more stuck. I am wondering if i take the housing off, finish pushing the sleeve out and fit a FTC5258? It seems the simpliest solution because im going to have to remove the housing anyway and the 5258 seems a lot easier to fit than 8220.

Ive added a picture for your viewing, the sleeve has been pushed in on the bottom right hand side!

Cheers

Pete

ive realised im being really daft - the metal sleeve is part of the seal and being used to the more flimsy 5258 type seals i thought the metal was part of the axle. so so stupid!!! its how we learn though

the seals are very similar ,ftc5258 has a rubber skirt on outer face to contact the later type of mudshield and is thinner than frc8220, though either can be used in any rover diff depending on which mudshield is used on flange, later mudshield protrudes into the diff housing where earlier one doesnt

My 'spare' or ongoing rebuild D1 / 200tdi is I believe one of the last & has fine-spline axles, once I finish the never ending welding I have to look at the rear axle case as its leaking oil (have a new pan to weld in) so the diff will have a looking-at
It's good to learn about differences even of the little things that can cause more grey-hair o_O

That said, my roadcar '91 D1 / 200tdi has 10 spline axles so I presume I'm gonna need to look at them sometime as well

Rich.
