Diff Oil (Which One)

Ok thanks for the advice. I'm going to have a look first to see how bad this leak is. I've not noticed any on the floor under the diff when it's parked up but there's definitely oil on the bottom of the diff.

Once I've sucked it all out I'll be able to measure the quantity to see just how much I've lost in seven years, that will give me an idea of how bad this leak is.

Another problem I have just found out. The oil I bought yesterday for the IRD, says Castrol Differential SAF-XO, on the front of the bottle. On the back it say's SAE 75w-90 API GL-5, is this the right stuff for the IRD ????? Purchased from main LR dealer.

my owners manual ( 2006 td4 manual-gearbox ) .. states:

IRD .. API GL5 + MT1
Rear Diff. .. API GL5

haynes states :

IRD .. Texaco S5 75W/90 .. API GL5
Rear Diff .. 80W/90 API GL5

~~~~
the API GL5 being the common factor ..
i looked up 'api gl5' 'n figured what that was ( as opposed to .. api gl4 )
looked up 'mt1' as well .. scant info on that .. besides a vw article mentioning
that it's an old spec. classification of somesort ..
rekon .. as long as the oils are API GL5 spec .. should be ok ..
maybe the oil viscosity rating be a climate / usage / personal preference
would seem so according to the haynes info ..
Thats brilliant thanks very much. Another thing I can stop worrying about now phew.
btw: so far the only oil i've found that covers both API "GL5" & "MT1"
be a commercial truck and bus oil by Millers
SYNTRAN FE 75w90
Gear & Transmission (Hypoid & EP)
For the lubrication of vehicle transmission systems, rear axles and gear boxes requiring API GL4/5 or API MT-1 level performance.
trouble is .. be in rather large containers ..
couple of links explaining the API specifications :
http://www.lubrizol.com/DrivelineAdditives/AutomotiveGearOil/GL5.html
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/tech-articles/API-Gear-Oil-Specifications.pdf
~~~~~~

regarding the API 'MT1' specification:

" API Category MT-1 designates lubricants intended for non-synchronized manual transmissions used in buses and heavy-duty trucks. Lubricants meeting API MT-1 provide protection against the combination of thermal degradation, component wear, and oil seal deterioration which is not provided by lubricants meeting only the requirements of API GL-4 and API GL-5. "

somewhat 'off-topic' .. but here's another link to oil specs .. engine oil in this case .. 'n might be a tad out-of-date ( dunno ) ..

I'll stick with the one I've got now. It just made me think they had given me the wrong oil when I saw Differential on the label. I know it's important to put the right stuff in the IRD. It was bought from main LR dealer so must be right...............Hopefully.

mmm .. re. the added 'api mt1' spec in my owners manual
Might be there to ensure the possibilty of the ird being put under Big stress ..
i.e. if the 4wd system / vcu was used in extended circumstances ..
a.f.a.i.k. .. the ird gets the most stress from that ..

~~~~~~
Millers Oils be not far from my locality .. and they have a retail shop on their premises
am going to see if they'd sell a smaller quantity of their 'syntran' oil ..
Interesting to find out if they sell small bottles for future use. This is what it say's on the back of the bottle:
SAE 75w-90; API GL-5
Scania STO 1:0; MAN 342 Type S-1;
ZF TE-ML 05B, 12B, 17B, 19C
Not got a clue what any of that means.
that castrol product
Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W-90 (Formerly SAF-XO 75w-90)
" Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W-90 (Formerly SAF-XO 75w-90) is Castrol's prime recommendation for a full synthetic lubricant for final drives in heavy commercial vehicles. "
if it' ok for final drives in heavy commercial vehicles ..
methinks it shouldn't do the hippo IRD any harm :) ..
So basically they're calling the IRD a differential ????
sort of .. :)
be only a name ..
one could call it a 'front-differential-plus-a-few-other-bits .. i suppose
looking at the haynes diagram of the ird ..
just by where the r.h. driveshaft sits ..
there's an empty circular space .. named "3" ..
description for "3" .. be .. 'differential unit'
Yes your right, Just looked myself. So there you are IRD/Differential
found another that meets the 'MT1' SPEC ..
'Mobilube 1 SHC™ 75W-90' :
Mobil | Heavy Duty Engine Oils | Rear Axle Lubricants | Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90
~~~~

as does .. Redline 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil ..

Red Line Synthetic Oil - Gear Oil for Differentials - 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil

Red Line oils are designed for the ultimate lubrication in the harshest conditions. I've uses there products in diff and gearbox applications for many years. This includes the fragile gearbox fitted to the Triumph Spitfire. I ran 160 bhp through a the Spitfire box / diff on the race track for 3 seasons without a problem which shows how good Red Line products are. Like I said in post 2, for ultimate protection you will find it hard to better Red Line.
