Hi Folks,
Landrover 90, D reg, 2.5 na.
I am looking for some help/advise regarding an issue with the Difflock warning light stays on.

What happened was I just bought this vech and was checking the operation of the difflock, by this I mean I messed about with the lever, into low and across to lock, when I done this I noticed the warning light came on, so I assumed it would go back off when I managed to get it back into high.
What actually happened was that the light now stays on, I am not experienced at all in the operation of diff locks and now feel I should have left well alone however I need to learn about this.
Could it be that a switch is stuck? I read an old post that talked of diff wind up, what is this? and how do I know if the difflock is engaged ect, I dont want to ruin the box.

Also where is the switch located

At the moment the vech seems to drive normal selecting all gears and can drive at normal speed

thanks for looking

I dunno about Landy Diff locks....

BUT.

When we have to engage the Diffs and cross locks on the trucks when on sites etc, when we want to turn em off we have flick switch off, light will stay on, then reverse for a metre or two, this will disengage the locks and dash lights will go out. Dunno if this will be the prob you are having etc...

My TD5 defender is similar, after going through water my diff lock light goes faint when disengaging it, i believe it to be just the switch :).

Could be you have wind up, did you use it on hard ground? This is bad for it, only play with it on soft muddy ground, sand etc...

You have essentially put pressure between the locked components, and they are locked in place by the friction to put it simply.

I have 1st hand experience of this - with vehicle in gear, jack up one wheel - if the wheel rotates by hand then diff lock is disengaged, if you cant rotate the wheel then diff lock is on - when mine was jammed the wheel actually spun round a few times with the wind up in the transmission.
The switch is mounted on top of the transfer box and is adjusted by a locknut. If you prove manually that the diff lock is working ok and its just a switch fault, check the wiring before you disturb the switch cos it can chafe thro on the prop and earth out giving an engaged signal. steve
