Ok I understand the diff lock and why it does it, even down to how it dose it.

But the discovery is the first time I have come accross the ability to lock it.

My new one will go into High, Low, And same on the Diff Lock. But no light and no lock (I can lock the others and can feel the lock through the wheels and steering) I am going to try it in the air to see if the wheels are turning or not but I was wondering.

How dose the system lock the Diff?

What mechanics take place from lever to diff?

Where are all the parts on the car so I can check them?

Could it be that mine has been taken off? As I have been in ones that have seized and you have to fight to get it accross to Diff Lock but mine is smooth moving and works in both High and Low box just the Diff don't lock.

If any one knows of a film clip or the likes that explains it then let me know, I have seen them for automatics and Limmited Slip Diffs on Youtube before.

Thanks in advance.

dont confuse the diff lock on a disco with axle diff lockers.
a disco1 has a center diff lock, some disco2's didnt have one in favour of Traction Control. Some disco2's had them retro fitted and the dealers bought it back as an option some years later after the disco2's release.

Hi sorry for the late reaction!

No it is the Discovery 1 300 TDI.

The Manual P reg TDI works in all 4 positions (Transfer box) and the Diff lock light comes on and the wheels squeek build up and let slip grip.

The Auto P reg TDI works in all 4 positions (Transfer box) but the Diff lock light dosn't come on and the wheels/ drive feels the same in all 4 positions.

In contrast I have another that works in High and Low (No DL) but will not move over to the DL side making me think it is seized.

I am wondering id the Auto have had something removed either cos it was seized or simply to remove it? I am not sure it the Auto box is original or if it was an aftermarket mod as it is a commercial.

The thing is it will drive in the diff lock position just it drives as it would in the normal position.

I understand how a diff works

But I am thinking something may be missing thus it been in position but it not been locked.

I am thinking that the transfer box may not be complete.

Just a thought...

My p reg 300 auto is the same as yours, linkage is free (now!) but I get no light and if i lift a wheel it spins whichever position the transfer box is in...
Could it be summat landrover did in t'factory???

If it is a 300TDI then it has a centre diff lock. If its not working when you move the lever to the left then its not engaging. You need to get underneath and see what the linkage is doing while someone moves the lever

Its a centre diff lock not a true diff lock. It Just locks both axles so they rotate at the same speed. It does not lock individual wheels.

I think.

The centre differential is a differential, the diff lock locks it. In what way is it not a true diff lock?

It may not do what some people expect a diff lock to do, but it is still a diff lock.

Thats why i called it a centre diff lock. I used the word true diff lock because people expect it to work like an ARB locker on both axles... and it doesn't.

G
Yes, but the centre diff lock is still a true difflock. It truly locks a differential and you could say it works on both axles, as it has an effect on both axles, unlike an ARB locker which only works on the axle it is fitted to and not both.

p.s
my wife gets really fed up with the way I argue and quibble about words when we all know what we mean :)

Yes ok i used the wrong ****ing word but when people say "diff lock" they think they are getting the same traction offered by a pair of individual ARB lockers. When they are not. I was just trying to DIFFerentiate ;)

Yes it does work on both axles, but only by distributing power evenly and rotating the props at the same speed. It is not as good as an individual locker within the axle.
