Diff Lock explanation to woman needed

I know i am probably going to have loads of you laughing yourselves off your chairs with the following thread but here goes. I have never fully understood the diff lock.. on the knob it shows high and low diff and high and low normal... High normal being normal road driving gears. What are the other three individually suited for? I was also told when disengaging Diff you must reverse? is this correct and what order do you do it in? reverse and change or change and reverse? i have got myself confused with it all.

I have but its all foreign language to me talking about centre diffs and shafts and allsorts... this makes no sense to me i just want it in an explanation a blonde would understand :D

where's NoB, get him to explain it using as many long words as he can - that'll be about the right level for ya
 
normal road driving high without dif lock
Low without dif lock for crawling up very very steep hill with large load-Himalayas or very wet field/somewhere requiring slow speed control.
High diflock would be boggy/ loose surface and flat and if it was at point of stalling in first or need for slow speed control time to select diff lock low -example wet muddy grass hill.

Not the best but will give some idea

as you said High range is used for driving on normal roads

Low range is for situations where extra torque is needed such as pulling very heavy loads or steep hills

diff lock high range is for situations where you want to keep the engine revs down but are likely to loose traction

diff lock low range is for situations where you need maximum torque at low speed and are likely to loose traction

diff lock or centre differential lock 'locks' the front and rear prop shafts together* causing them to turn at the same speed no mater what

when out of diff lock the front and rear prop shafts can turn at different speeds

*not strictly true but it is the easiest way to explain it

thanks for these explanations.. two more things.. what is this about reversing to disengage diff? and my light doesnt come on my dash when diff is engaged. is it suposed too?
 
you don't always have to but it can help it disengage, and yes it is supposed to come on, i would say get it looked at, either its not engaging diff lock or the switch/wiring/lamp is faulty

i can feel the diff is definately engaging so it must be the light i will get it looked at.

most important thing is to return to high without difflock as soon as you are going onto tarmac or surface with grip-driving miles on a road with diff lock will damage transmission.

ok..im bored..i'll give some of it a shot...in blonde woman speak

Imagine you need lots of new shoes...you go to 'big bird shoe shop'..

You get a trolley which has 4 wheels...you are pushing the trolley (rear wheel drive)

you decide to go from aisle 1 to aisle 2 (a 180 left hand degree turn)

The left hand wheels travel LESS than the right hand wheels as you corner (you with me) This is like the diff-lock NOT being engaged...the wheels are allowed to move at different speeds.

This is fine...unless your trolley drives thru some ice cream...the wheels on that side would just spin...you'd lose control and hit a lesbian looking at your breasts.

If the wheels were 'fixed' so they moved at same speed this would be like diff lock engaged...when you hit the ice cream..the wheels spin at same speed giving you more traction and thus avoid a potentially embarassing situation...or in my case a normal visit to the shops..

Hope this helps...its a bit more complicated, with torques and speed of rotation...but i hope u get the idea..
