Tell you what
Save all the arguments when i get to the pump and get it working ill put a multi meter across it,and tell you when a 98 has power!

Why did they run the pump from so many supplys anyway? Does it use differant voltages ?
Surly it would have been easyer to power it from ignition live?
It's a matter of safety, you don't want the pump running with a dead engine in the event of an accident for example.

You do talk some crap at times. It totally depends which year of vehicles was being discussed at the time. Just like now if i recall correctly you insisted the lift pump worked on cranking because the one you owned did. For christ sake look at the wiring diagrams if you can understand them.
ok been out back looked and investigated like you say position II will use relay and drop it when ecu feels fit via glow plugs yes there is a section that says rhe diesel fuel pump will not be activated on diesels untill it recives an out put from alternator , fuel pump (109)but also says from position three starter will activate it doesn't indicate years as I have read both 97 and 99 onwards they seem identical to me . No matter what it says if I turn over the cars when the glows have gone out they both squirt fuel that's why I asked earlier what is the differance between a started car and one being cranked as the ecu must still be reciving info from both scenarios ?

The way I interpret it is you turn the ingnition switch on to position two the system is primed and the pump and glow plugs are deactivated the pump will not be running there after no need as fuel isn't needed until this is my point the engine is being cranked or is running either of the last two reactivate the pump as fuel will be needed thereafter.

Right im at the pump and i tell its not like the one in the how to..
These fuel pipes are never gona come off there so badly rusted
Im looking at 4 wires which is the pumps live?
Want to try run it before i try remove it
Ive got 2 black a green and a white with blue stripe

My multi meter showing the black are both earth the white with blue stripe is 12v live with glow plugs and the green carrys 5v live?
So unless somthing seriously wrong the pump is getting power but not running?

The connection also has the Fuel Level sender to it hence the 4 wires...

Earth for Pump
Earth for Sender
Power to Pump
Power to Sender (5v Line voltage)

The Lift pump is a common fail item....

Look at the wiring diagrams posted by Ant. Follow the circuits see where they go and count the diodes on 97 version then follow the circuits and count the diodes on 99 version. Lift pump on with cranking did not come in until MY 1999. Simple as that.

Is there a differance between the petrol and diesel in tank pump?
Theres a guy on ebay within walking distance of were i work got them for £35 with nuts and olives but its advertised as petrol v8

Yes. Petrol is a pressure pump diesel is a lift pump.
