Diesel wont start

Went out this mourning and the car will not start wont even hint at firing sounds like there no fuel being injected.
have had bad starting before but always fired up in the end.
fitted new glow plugs as nanacom found fault with glow plugs.and fault cleared itself when new ones fitted.
This time Nanacom register this fault;-

Invalid fault
type invalid fault major fault,logged intermittent
RPM=0
unknown=185
occurrance=6

anyone have any ideas what this means?
battery voltage started at 12.3 but now dropped to 11.9 but have a jump pack connected and turns over ok but not a hint of firing also when starting was bad when it did fire it sounded like the cold start fuel didnt cut in untill after it had nearly stalled.
also when cold it didnt want to start but if i started it every 4 hrs it was ok and started ok when the glow plugs were bad

Crank Sensor or Injector 4 Sensor???

Would they stop starting or just run like a pig....

I am guessing the EDC system gets engine speed from Crank Sensor....

Once the was started before it ran smoothly with good fuel economy

just been out and cracked the injectors and no fuel there checked the fuel lift pump and no fuel being pumped through so could be the problem let you know when new pump fitted.

i know you will have, but have you tried changing the fuel pump relay ?

how much fuel in the tank ,if under 1/4 ,be lift pump.

If there is no fuel at injectors. Either stop solenoid has failed or it has lost sync. If lift pump not running check fuse 39.

Those faults always show on cranking especially if the battery voltage is a tad low. Can be ignored if you can clear them with the engine running and they don't come back until you start it again.

if you have no fuel check the cutoff switch inside the little door beside the accelerator pedal it has a rubber cover push down on the top of the rubber

That is for petrol engine not applicable to diesel.

Does the cranking speed seem higher than usual? If so, check glow-plug relay fuse. It's in the ECU box behind the battery.

Why would the cranking speed change if the glow plug fuse had blown? You would not be getting a glow lamp if that was the case.

11.9V sounds pretty low for the battery. I'd get a decent charge on that before I start anything. Worth checking sync just to make sure that's eliminated. Then see what codes come up.

Thanks for all the replies
I just fitted a new in tank pump and it started up after bleeding the system.
Some of the faults cleared but the intermittent fault is still there and cant be cleared so will have to investigate further.

!!! You talked me through this when mine blew! Glowplug circuit is - battery -relay - glowplugs. The light comes from the low current side of the relay.

If the 80 amp fuse goes, light still comes on. It is timed, not governed by any thermostat. However, cranking speed increases because the glowplugs aren't drawing anything.

Are you sure it was me. Don't think it was. You are not supposed to operate starter until glow lamp goes out.

I didn't attempt to do so. The fact remains that if the glow plug fuse has gone, cranking speed is faster.

Guilty as charged but I don't think I'm the first or probably the last person to flatten the battery a bit when a car doesn't start.
