Hi all

Im in need of some help..I recently bought a Range Rover P38 2.5 DSE..
Ive had a brand new head/glow plughs fitted..I had a hot start problem but purchased the hot start fix off a certain online market place.

All was good apart from I had to use the ingnition switch twice to use the glow plugs twice and it would start fine without any issues..

Now the weird thing is i iused the car without any fault on Friday, We had the cold snap, I went out to trart it Saturday morning and it wouldnt start.Ive fitted a new battery the alarm works fine no warnings on the information centre only the eas which has been changed for coil springs hence why that comes up.

Im racking my brains to see why its been starting fine, and then over night its given up the ghost..As stated the alarm is working ie lock unlock any ideas

Could be a loss of sync...

The BeCM and the Engine ECU have to 'Handshake' before the BeCM will allow the car to start....

It is rare on the diesels to lose sync but no uncommon - the V8's lose sync quite readily...

Does the engine crank and at what sort of speed - P38's hate weak/low batteries so it could be after the cold snap the battery is getting tired, the diesel needs to spin quite a bit for it to fire.

My guess is a low/weak battery, replacing it with a 135Ah 1100CCA(? - Datatek will know which one) Alphaline (around £98 from batterymegastore) will spin her over with great gusto....

Secondly could be a loss of sync - depending on year either the Check Engine light will not be lit after the bulb check. to resync you'll need to use either a diagnostic device or a BBS Syncmate.

In tank fuel pump is also a possibility as is an old dirty fuel filter, but as you are having to cycle the glowplugs twice I would go for battery as SV8 said, low cranking speed is a common problem on diesels.

Thanks for the welcome.

I filled up on friday its got about 3/4 of a tank of diesel in it.I tested the fuel tank pump and seems to be working fine..The way could im thinking it could be the imobilisor of something along those routes as my battery used to also drain down by itself

Battery drain is usually the RF receiver but that could also mean loss of sync.

Hi ZZr1200 thats a great bike by the way but the wife wont let me have any more now lol.. sorry i only joined this forum today ive updated my details im from dartford in kent..Just got a new battery, also a fuel filter...just about to change them both if the typical english weather will let me will keep you posted any help is really appreciated

Update fitted new fuel filter, brand new battery still no go in the old girl...the warning lights that i have left on after self check are abs, oil, and battery, also the brake light as it was applied.the central locking is working fine.if the imobiliser is active would the central locking not work sorry but im new to all of this.....

The immobiliser has nothing to do with ECM being out of sync with BECM. If the code in the BECM does not match the EMS code stored in the ECM the engine will not start. You need a Syncmate, Nanocom or similar to reset it.

Starting to sound like loss of synch between engine management system and BECM. Black-box Solutions (no affiliation) do a Syncmate or you could go the whole hog and buy a Nanocom (I did). Or find a member near you with a Nanocom or similar.

I had my car recovered to london range rover in charlton.it turns out that the imobiliser had lost its code.after literally 3O seconds it was up and running again.

The rf reciever has now be deativated because that was half of the problem.too many wireless signals ie cctv cameras, mobile phone mast, and door bells.

aparentley with these signals it wakes up the alarm systen, and thus drains the battery and leading to lose the code in the becm.all is good now thank fook, and thank you for everyones input

You just need to buy a new updated RF receiver which will cure the problem and leave you with the central locking etc working correctly:)

The immobiliser code is the EKA code. The code that was lost was the ECM to BECM sync code. Nothing to do with immobiliser. When immobiliser is active engine will not turn over.
