Hello all, just bough a 1995 P38 manual diesel, nice truck and everything works

there are a couple of issues though i would like peoples advice on.

When idling in neutral there is a grinding noise from below which i believe is the clutch release bearing as the sound stops when the clutch is depressed (Am i right?)

second the grearbox whines mostly in 3rd/4th and crunches into 2nd and 4th. Is this because of the clutch or worn syncro's or likely to be something else?

I would like to have a good idea of what i need to replace before i get the gearbox removed and the truck is off the road.

as above ,check oil for contamination filings /metal sheen ,could be sign of worn bearings as well as synchro rings ,bearing between mainshaft and input shaft is especially prone to poor lubrication and can cause issues with 4th gear selection

It had a gearbox oil change just before i picked it up (from my brother in laws garage so i trust it was done ;) )

forgot to mention the truck has done roughly 190K with a new engine fitted about 100k ago.

Ask what state the oil was in...as the others say above, it it had a burnt smell, metal sheen or debris in it, that could give an idea to any problems....

Changing the oil could have been done to mask an issue, as they knew it would show the GB is worn or on its way out...so changing the oil will hide the cause...!!

Ask about the oil...!!

oh we knew it was going to need work and he changed the oil to see if it would improve the issues that i have described, it hasn't made any difference though.

It won't do unless you stick some thicker oil in it, that may quieten it down a bit. But if it's knackered it's knackered. Whining in a gearbox is usually the lay gear not meshing properly due to wear in the layshaft bearings. The fact that it's 3rd and 4th tells you which end of the layshaft it is. It won't whine in 5th because that is direct drive, and not through the layshaft.
