Can anyone enlight me on a little information I recived recently. Is it true you can convert a diesel engine to run on LPG. If so has anyone converted a td5 & what's it like? Power wise & reliability & cost.

no.dont be silly.

run on cng yesish...using diesel as a ignitor..long hauage trucks and some buses do this...

diesel AND lpg (90+%diesel..10%(or less) lpg yes...i do,but not on a td5.but a nissan 6 poter...more power or economy..your right foot decides

You can convert a diesel to LPG. If you change half the engine to convert it to a petrol engine lol.

LPG dont do compression ignition

He's not on about running on lpg in the same way you would a petrol engine. He's on about running on both fuels at the same time. You can have a diesel and LPG fuel system combined but unless you do stupid miles it won't ever pay for itself.

500 miles a week at the least. Diesel ratio 16:1 and petrol 10:1 don't know LPG assuming it's round the same. How is it possible to burn both @ the same time? I mean how does it work?

Fecking arse, most stopped or went bust-mileage enhancer at best

it is done very successfully, i get my lpg from calor hall road in norwich they have several ford rangers running lpg /diesel and they go like stink, as for cost implications have no idea just that is done quite widely now most london transportbuses run this system lots of taxis etc. etc. so i imagine long mileage is the way to get payback.

engineer:):)

maybe i should have shouted??

i use it.works very well...turn it on and i get 40mpg out of 4 door rangie up in the air running 3.3l straight six turbo deseil..thats taking it easy..

or i floor it and it beats 3.9l v8's...(really it feels like i have an extra cylinder or 2 when on.)

i say gives me 15-20% more power.and cleaner looking exhaust...

i love it....

i recon it works best on older mechanical pump diesels, as later (td5?)will be more effient anyway...

oh the yanks have been using it for years..

it works by igniting when the diesel ignites,it causes a quicker flame front and causes all (nearly) the diesel to be burnt, thus more power/or more economy..

It can be done. I dont proffes to know much about it but from what i have read on it it works well.
The system is designed to inject a small amount of gas in to help the derv burn hotter there fore giving more power which in turn can give improved economy.
Not seen much about the figures though.

most blurb quotes 15%, the quantity of gas injected is very small so its not gonna make filling up any cheaper but you COULD use the extra power to increase economy....depends on your right foot really

Think it's called lpg or diesel fumigation or something like that...and it leads to a more complete burn of the diesel when used in small quantities hence the lower emissions or greater power. Tempted to try it on my 200 tdi but too many projects already. Spoke to my local hgv haulage firm and they considered using it but felt there wasn't quite enough in it to make it worthwhile as they were quite local. Popular in Aus and USA because of much greater distances at constant throttle positions etc... Kate

sounds about right.......my thinking is its not going to make a lot of difference for us types that spend alot of time with our foot flat on the floor....(through necessity).....unless your desperate for the extra ooomph
