Fitted new fuel pump, fuel hoses are full and no air bubbles. Wait for it, Wait for it, it will not start. It tries to start but kicks out loads of light blue smoke which smells of diesel. I was going to try and bleed the injector pipes but I read somewhere it will self bleed.

Starting to sound like it may be timing chain jumped. If you find the tech guide for setting static timing, you may be able to eyeball whether the cam lobes look in the right place with pin in the flywheel. However if its 1 tooth out it might not be very obvious

Its not a self bleed system normally you crack off the nut at a couple of injectors till you get diesel and it fires

Yes that's what I thought. I can't help but think it has got something to do with the glow plug control, ( as per diagnostics ). If I turn the ignition on until the glow plug light goes out it tries to start, if I turn it on and off a few times until the light goes off it will turn over a bit longer with no smoke. I have been told that the bmw engine does not want to start unless all glow plugs are working.
Static timing is ok.

You need at least three consecutive ones working.

But if cranked long enough it will start with a very good battery....

Hi All, you will not believe this but the symptoms have returned. Got in it yesterday, started first time, so I took the wife shopping around 10miles. Started first time to go home after shopping , but on the way home
it had no response on the accelerator. Managed to get it home, came out this morning and it is back to how it was before, will not start and if I keep it turning over on the starter it kicks out loads of light blue smoke and smells of diesel.
Fuel pipe is full no air bubbles, I can not believe how nice it ran first thing yesterday.:mad::mad:

Fault codes?

If it is the glow-plug control again then something must be causing it to blow.

Did you get good quality glow plugs when you changed them?

So if i have this right you are driving along and you get no throttle response, is this as you lift of the throttle and try to go back on again, as mine dose it occasionally and you almost have to bump start it as its rolling, and do you get the injector spray symbol flash up on the dash as you change gear ,
if it so its the fuel quantity servo in the top of the injection pump going out of range, i manage to drive round it by not lifting of all the way
The late Wammers would say its the sign of impending doom and the pump needs a recon
do you know what modulation the pump is at, as you may get round it a bit by taping the pump in towards the engine .5 - 1mm to take up the slack on the chains.
