Took my 24 volt Distributor out as changing to 12 volt.
Now someone mentioned that I should of marked it first for timing or something before I can fit the 12 volt back in. , Is that Right ?
as I forgot ?

Alternator bracket note where the brass bush is this would have been a tapped blind hole originally it has been drilled through and bushed as bolt had sheared in hole. Worked ok on my engine,
The alternator mounting holes where badly worn I bought two top hat bushes drilled and welded these in to take slop out of it. The original would have had a bigger hole for the sliding tube that goes on the rear mounting bolt.Quite confident it will be usable.

Not sure why you'd need to mark anything. Find top dead centre on #1, put the new distributor with the rotor pointing at #1 then time the ignition as normal

But yes agree ^^^^ no issue without marking first I think the worst you could be is 180 degrees out as per the slot on the distributor drive.

Not sure how the drive gear (the bit you can see in the pic) is located but dont move/lift that;).

Well next question is how do I get TDC, done a little reading on it,
As far as I can see there are no marks on my wheel just one slit which I take means something when lined up with the 3 pronged thingy..

Starting handle, or socket on the front pulley, whichever works. Turn the engine over with plug out on number 1. You should hear air coming out of the plug hole as the piston comes up on the compression stroke. If you want to be sure, take the rocket cover off and both rockers on#1 should be free.
Put a long screwdriver down the plug hole, (don't lose it!!) And you'll see it move up as the piston comes up as you hand crank the engine. When it's at the top, your good to go.
You only need to be approximate to line the distributor up for #1, then time it properly later

Might have a go at this this weekend, I dont have a starting handle, doesnt look like a socket will fit. how do I turn it ?.
There is a groove circled on pic, is this the TDC mark ? cant see anymore on wheel.

Yep that cut you've circled is the timing mark. The big tooth is tdc. The others 3 and 6 degrees, if i recall.
If you take the plugs out, you might turn it with the fan blades, tug on the belt a bit for some extra grip to stop it slipping

Thanks mate, have not got Alternator fitted yet, but can stick a fan blade on to turn it. Still quite away before I start it, just want to get things set up ready.
