Put your thumb over the plug hole, you'll feel it blow as the piston comes up as you turn the engine over when the valves are closed
Thanks again, sorry for all qeustions but just want to get it right, will I need any gasket sealer under the top plate before I bolt it in ? there is an aluminium gasket there, also I have the dog thingy in there does the disttbuter just pop in and turn.

There's the aluminium gasket but i think there should also be an O ring on the shaft?
If i remember, there's the gear you can see with the slot in, there should be another bit that fits in with another slot at 90 degrees which the distributor slots in to. Easy to knock out and get wrong when you fit the distributor

Yes I have the other bit that the distributor slots in to. Missing o ring unless there's one on new distributor

This is what I have in first pic, but missing the O ring, probably wont be able to get one till next week now, unless theres anything else that could be used.
I had to turn engine by hand as Im on my own so couldn't feel for any blowing out of hole but it does come right up with the screwdriver test when the mark is at TDC on flywheel, when I turn it right off TDC I can get the long screwdriver right in, but when its turned back to TDC it only goes in a litle bit as in pics.
Now when its on TDC and screwdriver is only in a little, when I line the bottom grove of distributor up with the groove down in the hole the Cap points to number 1, so does this sound right.
Hope yous can understand all that.

It's not really hit and miss, i can't remember what the workshop manual says but with the 'collar' already in place, the distributor just slots in, it's not hard, but keep it lined up straight or it's easy to dislodge. Turn the rotor arm back and forth a bit too help click in to place

Been away.
All sounds good, but you could be 180 out.
As you are on your own put a plug in number 1 and turn it by hand you will feel the diff between the compression stroke over the exhaust stroke.

If you info the clamp bolt it should spin round freely
Right never thought of that, should it be facing the other way round towards rear of engine ?

Not sure what you mean, all 4 plugs are in at the moment, I took number 1 out to TDC it, it is back in now.
