I had a problem last week when there was a loud bang from underneath. I thought it was the rear diff as the filler plug was missing. Coincidence. I could hear a wirring noise from the back so to eliminate axle or prop, i took off the rear prop and drove in diff lock.i then got a bad vibration when easing off and stepping on gas.Couple of days later driving along and I thought that the gearbox had fallen off. Terrible loud bang and vibration. When I towed it back home I had a look underneath and could see nothing wrong. I haven't taken it back on the road but can still drive in toward and reverse as if nothings happened. The only comparison between both episodes was I was in 5th gear when the bangs happened.any ideas???? What are the symptoms of driving in diff lock, just in case that's what's happened?

Just spent the last wek in 2wd cos the Rear UJ went. Apart from play in Transfer box causing a bit of a clonk. There was no difference between 2WD & 4WD.

Well apart from been able to spin front wheels when pulling away. :D

Always managed to avoid difflock in anything other than mud, snow and loose surfaced lanes. However, in theory, using difflock on tarmac can cause things to break.
Once had changed mine from low to high ratio and not got it in correctly. Stotted around a bit then, not sure why!

Mine does that occasionally. Whenever I stop and go underneath and try to see what it was I can't see anything amiss. Maybe it's stones getting thrown up and hitting the underside of the floor - a nice resonant aluminium surface, after all. I've had vibration from worn propshaft joints (now replaced) and squeaking noises from the handbrake (cured by replacing the shoes and internal mechanism) but the bangs are a mystery.

if you cant tell the difference between a locked diff and not on tarmac, step away from the landy :p unless a 90s different to a 110, I can tell as soon as I go round a corner.

Not locked then. Roads round here vary from dirt/gravel/loose chippings and tarmac. Go on all types every trip.
The noise I heard was no stones being thrown up! More like big rocks.
Anywhy, while waiting for diagnosis, when out and bought a 95 110 300tdi. Chassis good, rear cross member on way out. Engine and drive train spot on. Bodywork, well that's a different story. Bought it off a Mr. S. O,wonder
