My gearbox was an AW one, there's many other small outfits too. Just a case of using google and not taking it to the biggest name. Many of the smaller ones will do a better job too!

So they sell lockers and make there own brand of lockers, as well as gear sets(ring and pinion. and have spares sitting on the shelf ready for shipping UK wide? same day?

Do a search for AW and root beer comes up

They do not even sell or have the same services as Ashcroft. There is no comparison to them, as different as night and day

The point was smaller outfits, they'll do boxes

Theres other small places too that'll do a diff etc, most will probably do as good or a better job than ashcroft at any rate. Some will obviously fall short but if you do a little homework you can find out which ones to avoid, the AW guys are good if not I wouldn't have bothered with the box and gotten a good low mileage one

You missed the whole things on this thread. Op was trying to find info for his locker. If I ever needed transmission, or transfer case work JM would be the first I would contact. If it was for lockers, HD ring and pinion sets, or pegged diffs, or HD axles, then ash croft would get a call.

No I saw that, I was referring to his post saying you should stop sending everything to ashcroft when theres many others

Ashcroft is just the biggest name, its like shopping at somewhere like Halfrauds rather than the local motorfactor

Or in food terms somewhere like Asda instead of the local butchers

Well doc the first 2 are just as large or larger then ashcroft not a mom and pop shop like you are saying. The 3rd sells others people stuff again no comparison/not in the same league

First ones probably smaller I'd say, the second would be my choice of diff as we use them for the racers

There was a list of all the engineering firms that made up props, diffs etc which I had but I cant find it now.

so how many diffs have you installed in the racers/ and how many racers have you built. Could be they are donated as to reason uni uses them

And if you phone steve at crown diffs you will get a better answer than phoning anyone listed on this post so far
Ashcroft are a rip off. They make great lockers but don't buy from them I saved near £400 taking my business to crown diffs.

Steve is a good bloke and has helped me before, knows his stuff and will tell you what he can on the phone.
Ashcroft is a big concern now and I have not dealt with them for years. With any big operation there will be some dissatisfied customers.
I have met Ian Ashcroft, many years ago, when he worked out of his shed, I picked up a transfer box from him and we got on fine. His son has advised me on the phone at no cost. For the firm to have experienced such growth I don't think they can be a total rip off, and I have always found the kit really good.
I see now they make a unit that replaces the centre diff on a 90 with a more robust version, Im sorely tempted, but like you say, they ainy cheap:eek:
Thread has turned into quite a discussion :D No idea whether he found out what diff he had :confused:
