derbyshire lanes demonstration to opposed closure of lanes

Details of an email I recieved for the organisation of a mass ( but peaceful ) demonstration towards the opposed closure of some green lanes in the peak district national park.


On Sunday 21st October there is a demonstration by some user groups to show their strength in opposing the closure of Green Lanes in Derbyshire.

THE ORGANISERS HAVE SENT US THIS INFORMATION:-

Saving the Peak District green lanes - UPDATE

Instead of meeting initially at Ashford-in-the-Water, please make your way to car park at the rear of the Monsall Head Hotel at grid ref: SK 185 715, which is about 1.4 miles north of Ashford.

We have made this change to accommodate the potentially high numbers of people who have expressed support. Ashford is rather space constrained. The Hotel car park is better able to handle large groups of vehicles. Refreshments can be had here and there are public toilets.

The route remains largely the same:

Leave Ashford on the A6020, head for Great Longstone - Little Longstone to rendezvous at Monsal Head Hotel car park - north to Wardlow - Foolow - Grindlow - Great Hucklow - Little Hucklow - head north on minor road - after 0.25 mile turn east at grid ref SK 161 790 - B6049 to Bradwell - Brough - east on A6187 to Hathersage - there turn south on B6001 - after 0.7 mile turn west on minor road to Leadmill & Abney - through Gt Hucklow (again) - south to Tideswell on B6049 - Millers Dale - Blackwell - cross the A6 and loop through Taddington - Bakewell via the A6.

After this, the following villages make a good circuit:

Leave Bakewell on the B5055 then take the minor road south through Haddon Fields - head to Youlgreave via a left turn at grid ref SK 190 643 - Bradford - south to Elton - Winster - Darley Bridge - north west to Stanton Lees - Stanton in Peak - travel via the A6 through Bakewell to finish back at Ashford.

An A4 placard is available for use inside vehicle rear and side windows.
Please print one or three off before you set out, for the rear and both side windows, (if you have them).
In a plastic sleeve, this will also work on the cover of a rear door mounted spare wheel, or the back of a motorcyclist’s jacket (with duct tape!):

dunno as yet myself there is no time on the email i recieved either!! going to email badlrc (where the mail came from) if they know the time and will up-date as soon as poss
just wanted to make people aware that this was happening and hopfully drum up some support

I would be up for supporting but unfortunately im in the states so a bit far really. If there is another demonstration after xmas i could be in if its of the peaceful type.

I dont think its a good idea to fill byways with a large number of vehicles as it defeats the object.

They are "considering" closing the lanes they mentioned due to damage... people emailed the council to show their view as they had asked (they are asking for public feedback at this stage).. consultation.

You will now turn up "with a mass" and drive around the lovely countryside on a Sunday with a sign in the windows which gets my back up already. You aim to block roads/traffic and make it inconvenient.

I think a group of anyone, (especially meeting at a pub) will get the local folks backs up... I know you have the right blah blah blah but I just dont think this kind of protest will help the cause any at all and if anything will hurt it.

The whole defence for green laning is... it doesnt cause damage/polution and is not groups more than 4... heaven forbid if anyone gets asked their opinion on why they do it... " cos we can like.... like the challenge....luv muddd innit like..."

Well done... in my opinion this is the kind of thing which puts another nail in the coffin for genuine green laning.

The only people who wont be ****ed off are those driving the 4x4's..... Its insanity... everyone will just say... "do we want this on that field over there... or on that byway over the pretty peak" "not bleeding likely"

Explain a bit about it and why you think it should be kept open and how the damage could be mitigated. The lanes in the Peak District are bad to drive now... you need to be able to answer how that demise can be reduced... thats the problem which needs addressing. Too many idiots going away for a weekend off-roading (literally) no matter what the weather is like.... Until you get people tuned to be able to say "no its to wet for that road today, I will cause damage to it and only give fuel to the campaigns against it"

You would be better dressing smartly and getting some educated members together to answer the basic challenge questions... then hand some flyers out and interact with the local community... some series folk and well spoken chaps would work wonders. Convince people we are not the scruffy cross between a white van driver and doorman.

Yeh appreciate what your saying, im just passing on an email and thought people mite be interested, like you say if you search for long enough you can find the info and have a read for yourself and then decide weather its for you or not.

I agree with Eric that reading about a mass group of vehicles put shivers up my spine.

Greenlaners want to go unnoticed in the countryside, not make a scene!!

I can see both side to be honest. How long have we all been filling in the forms and sending emails to the council? and where does it get us?

On the otherhand ERIC makes a good point, we dont need anymore bad publicity!

I believe the forms have got you a long way... at the end of the day its nearly 14 years since the whole green lanes riot has kicked off and most are still open and the walkers are up in arms crying murder.

We have caused massive damage and at this point in time the council are backing in most cases the right for 4x4'ers...

I think this will begin to change, especially when you consider the financial strain the councils are now under. They cant afford to fix the lanes...

if its rutted... (close it to vehicles)

So please.. THINK before you drive a lane... will you damage it further... if the answer is yes, please dont drive it.
