General Grabber AT2 or BF Goodrich AT ?

Our Defender 90 CSW still has the original Grabber TR tyres, fitted when it was new in 2006. Although not worn out they were poor in the snow last Christmas.

My local independent Land Rover dealer (Hallams of Hayfield, Derbyshire) recommended the BF Goodrich AT but they cost £600 a set fitted.

They also have the General Grabber AT2 at just under £500 so I was going to go with these instead. Are these OK?

I'm looking at mainly road use but hopefully reasonably good in the winter snow as well.

Is it worth paying the extra £100 for the Goodrich tyres?

Well..........I looked and I can't find any posts telling me whether I should get the Grabber AT2 or Goodrich AT for my Defender
And no that's not with rims. I've looked around and the Goodrich are about £150 each fitted
The Grabber AT2 is about £120

I know there are plenty of alternative tyres but I narrowed it down to these two, mainly because they are both in stock at my local Land Rover specialist.

There are questions that are often asked. When I had my Porsche 928 it was timing belts. On the Lotus forum it's head gaskets. The Transit forum? ECU issues. My old pre-war car....spares availability.

Live with it!

dont worrie to much lightning about these old timers on here (grumpy old men) as am sure they cant remember when they were young and were asking for advice, am sure the tyre thread has been done a million times before but sometimes its nice just to start a new thread. If it was me i would also go for the bfgs even though i have cooper stt's on my old girl.

I had generals on my discovery and my old td5 110 they were awesome, my new defender has bfg, and I personally hate them! The generals were much better on and off the road and are cheaper, only thing is they don't last as long! I'd seriously consider getting rid of these bfgs if a set of generals came up for sale!

There's no definitive answer on these tyre choices.

I've changed my mind, I'm going to save £100 and get the General Grabbers

They will be better than what I had, and those were OK until they wore down after 5 years of use.

Let us know how you get on with them. I'm currently looking at getting some at2s and have herd good things. My brother had them on his disco and had no complaints on or off road

I'd be looking at getting them on a separate set of wheels though as we do a lot of on road miles :D

I had them on my disco too and rate them very highly. As previously said great on and off road & last a long time too. Not used BFGs myself but if it was me I'd get the AT2s.

Also got a set for sale on disco rims (cheap plug). Although they are 235/70/16's but if just for a spare road set the slight loss in diff clearance wouldn't make a difference.

I ran new{ish} General Grabber TR in the snow last year without an issue...... still had around 10mm of tread left so plenty to clear the snow HOWEVER the snow does hold in the treads

I've had both and I would say the only real world difference is that bfg's will give more mileage but the grabbers are also very good its just the bfg's are interstellar.

BFG's every time. I've done 50000 miles on my BFG muds and they still have life left in them. They eat snow for breakfast !
