2000 (10P) Defender 90 with VNT running a Stage 3 Storm map and boost around 1.6-1.7bar, 265/75R16 AT wheels, Allisport intercooler, 1.2 ratio transfer box, no MAF, big K&N cone filter (from Honda S2000).

Cannot get above 75-80MPH, get to around that speed and all that happens is the EGT's continue to rise, although it gets there fairly quick.

I have noticed that my Nanocom correctly reads the High/Low state of the transfer box (and it changes when the level is moved). Is this an error (as in am I running the Low map in High?) as I thought Nanocoms were meant to read it wrong? Could it be as simple as just this causing the lack of top end power?

On further inspection holding the revs at a steady 2400rpm, engaging Low drops the revs to around 1100rpm. This would seem correct for the low range throttle map?

Things I have replaced:

* head gasket
* injectors (new reconditioned ones from Merlin Diesel)
* injector loom
* FPR (fuel pressure is good)
* all filters
* fuel filter housing
* crank sensor
* throttle pedal
* wheels - it was running 33x12.5R15's
* probably lots of other things I have forgotten

What top end speed were you getting before? Did your top end speed suddenly drop or has it dropped slowly?

Not sure if it’s a sudden drop or not, but thinking about it tonight it may well be the VNT. Previously (without the VNT) I have had to back off at 95 as it could be a bit worrying with 33” mud tyres o_O

The plan for tomorrow is to reinstate the original (almost new) turbo and see what happens.

Your engine and set up needs to be 100% bang on or the VNT wont be happy and cause running issues but that would be seen lower down.

Second id have the Storm map looked at, cant say I rate them. Many cases of dumping generic maps etc...

It is strange you seem to top out at 80/90 but I doubt thats down to low/high map switching. Your Map sensor in good order?
Boost box?

My 110 with a Hybrid has happily hit 100 and wanted to keep pulling, ran out of runway, well braking distance tbf. Thats with 285/65 STT Maxxs so not exactly a road tyre.

I’m wondering if we chose the wrong turbo to be honest. At the time there was a choice of two: a smaller one that spools up aggressively or a larger one that was still quicker than standard to spool up but better top end.

with the 33’s I was getting 95+ without the VNT with 33’s and with the VNT I was getting 85 max with 33’s and now 80ish max with 265/75/16 AT’s

who did your remap in the end, wasn’t the funny little man from Portugal was it?!

Morning, Tom1979. You've probably seen these videos, but just in case you haven't I thought I'd put the links on for you.
VIDEO 1
VIDEO 2
This young lad, Liam, has a stage 2 remap and is running his with his standard turbo. The stage 2 sounds and looks very impressive. I'm a 300Tdi owner and so don't look in to this sort of stuff much. But, was an uprated turbo specified by Storm Tuning for the stage 3 remap? If so, should the VNT be causing a problem? Don't take any notice of me though, I'm just interested in your thread and thinking out loud! :rolleyes:

yep I know those lads. The VNT was supplied by Storm yes.

Just thinking has it got a boost box or an uprated MAP sensor?

uprated map sensor but no boost box needed

If that's the case I doubt the original, standard turbo is going to match the stage 3 remap? I know you quoted a boost figure of 1.6-1.7 bar. Is that theoretical (for that VNT) or do you have a boost gauge so you can see that pressure being developed? I'm wondering if the turbo is actually delivering what it should?

I have a VDO boost gauge fitted, reading off the inlet manifold. I had a stage 3 map originally and it was then updated for the VNT

Speak to Daniel mate and tell him you’re not happy with how you’re landy is running! I asked Daniel about his maps being generic and he said it’s a load of old poppycock, Jose uses any old excuses to put other tuners businesses to shame, funny really, little Jose mapped a kids d2 I know, popcorn limiter and the goodies 400 meters up the road and “bang” there goes the engine, completely knackered, poor lad he’s only a young chap too, empire looks alright to be fair though

The original turbo shouldn't match the updated remap then?
Can a Nanocom check a MAP sensor function? I wonder if your updated MAP sensor is faulty?
Don't know mate, I'm just trying to think from a basic angle for you. I find when I'm stuck with an issue I often over look the obvious, cos I'm already over thinking it :rolleyes:

when you see the TD5inside videos and there’s an egt gauge in view it’s a bit concerning to say the least! And he reckons overfuelling reduces EGT’s ;)

I have spoken to him but to be honest I don’t get much back from him, he’s fairly busy I think.

Just MOT’d an old RRC that’s been stood for 10 years, plan later is to reinstate the old turbo and see what happens. The VNT map should still work it might just overfuel a bit, I have asked for the original stage 3 to be sent so if that comes beforehand we’ll put that map on

Swings and roundabouts really. Everyone will slag everyone off in order to win or keep business.

Shouldve made sure the car was in good nick before hand, both Jose and the kid.

Quite right AL203 the current set up wont work properly with the current mapping. Best is to speak to Storm really.

Thats one thing my EGTs have dropped by at least 30% since Empire retuned it.

Go back to the stage 2 mate, I’ve been really happy with mine and I’m towing most days! Just to confirm Daniel did say his Maps are not generic so either he’s talking out his backside (which i don’t think is true) or certain people just like talking a load of poo poo when they hear something in the pub so it must be true

i know they’re not generic, I was there when he wrote my stage 3 and there was nothing generic about that!

Thats the thing. Some will be bespoke. Some wont be.

Mainly because unless youre really pushing the performance of the engine you dont really need to. Its either hot or not.

I didnt have an EGT gauge for over 2 years, it was pushed very hard at points and never once had a hint of an issue. However having it fitted now just means if it does get very high I'll back off.
